Media copied/pasted from an external private source into the editor is not supported

    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Description

Currently media that is copied/pasted from an external private source (e.g. an email in a users Gmail account) into an Atlassian editor will not render correctly for other users.

Upon paste, the media item will render for any user who has permission to view it, but will show a “preview unavailable” message for any other users who do not have permission and try to view it.

What is an external private source?

An external private source is a location external to Atlassian where content exists that is forbidden to be used outside of the application that renders it. Usually a private source has some form of authentication associated with it like a cookie, short lived token or some other means of permission implementation. E.g. an email in a Gmail account.

      Workaround(s)

You can download the media file and then use the “Add image, video or file” button in the editor toolbar to upload the media.

      Supporting Notes

      • There is currently no industry wide solution available which would enable Atlassian to support this type of behaviour.

            Hi all,

I'm Rory, a PM from the Editor team. I wanted to provide a few quick updates in relation to this ticket:

            • We have converted this ticket into a suggestion to reflect that it is something that is not currently supported in our products. Unfortunately at this point in time it is not something the team has plans to take forward, however we will continue to monitor interest here.
            • We have created a seperate bug ticket focused around improving the handling of media pasted from an external private source into the editor. This can be found here: JRACLOUD-83718
            • Finally, as per Rachel's recent update - if you are experiencing copy and paste issues across different fields in Jira (e.g. from description to comment), please follow along JRACLOUD-83609 as the source of truth for updates.

            Thanks,

            Rory

            Hi f862a9771f32

Thank you for the feedback. We've updated the title and workaround to cater for more scenarios.

b53e59e1a9c1 concerning the "non-Author users" mentioned in today's changed summary (what are those supposed to be, as this is not a Jira-term? Reporter, Creator?) and the described workaround:
I think that is a misunderstanding of the issue. The "Preview unavailable thumbnail" is also displayed to the author even before creating the issue when pasting inline-images into e.g. the Description-field.

            Atlassian Update - April 2024

            Hi Everyone,

This is Rachel from the Editor Media team. We’ve noticed that the current ticket is addressing two distinct issues. To ensure that we focus on resolving each concern effectively, we have split the ticket into two.

If you are experiencing copy and paste issues across different fields (e.g. from description to comment), please follow along JRACLOUD-83609 as the source of truth for updates.

We will continue to use this current ticket to track progress for supporting copy and paste of external private images.

Thank you again for providing valuable feedback to our team!

As noted by others, this impacts not just content copy and pasted from a local source but content copied and pasted from another issue inside of Jira.  I have asked support this question, but it isn't clear to me how Atlassian justifies a severity 2 ticket to be open for 2 years gathering information.  I am but a small use of Jira.  Anyone else with a larger account and a little bit of clout have an Atlassian account manager to ask how they can ignore bugs like this for years?  (My answer from support pointing me here also defined "bug" for me.  As someone who, like pretty much all users of Jira, has seen a line or two of code in his life, defining bug was insulting.)

You get the same result if you copy/paste an image or images with text, from the description field of another Jira ticket into a new ticket's description.

We have the same issue, please provide ETA for solution

Hi. I'm facing with the issue linked as duplicated to this isse: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-75687

I have moved some content (including images) from the Description field to a comment field, and all my images are gone forever... Nice, permanent data loss. Thank you

Of course, the problem happened here as I tried copying the image in. Absurd

I've just submitted a ticket here. It's really problematic. Why can't this issue be fixed? Have you tried to just upload images copied???
