New Issue View does not respect Jira's Advanced Settings Date Format

      Atlassian Update - 11 June 2021

Hi everyone, thanks again for the interest on this ticket. We’re marking this ticket as closed now because a workaround has been released to solve the issue of "users always being forced into the American format of mm/dd/yyyy" by allowing each user to format their dates and times on the new issue view based on their language preferences. For many of you, this workaround solved the problem. (see details of workaround in May 24th update - it will be cross posed at bottom of this section as well)

For those customers that still face challenges with this solution we have opened a new ticket JRACLOUD-76814 where we will gather interest specifically on when the user level language based settings is not a viable solution. Please comment on this new ticket to let us know your specific use case (i.e. why it’s important to have a specific date/time settings, and whether you’d like it at admin or user level), so we can ensure the experience we release works for you.

For those concerned about their calendar locking Sunday as the first day of the week, watch and comment on this ticket: JRACLOUD-71611

Cross-post May 24th update on workaround

      • Users can now change the default edit and display of both date and date/time fields, using their language/locale setup (i.e. "en_AUS" or "Dutch") instead of being forced into the American month/day/year display only. Here’s how to setup yours: https://support.atlassian.com/atlassian-account/docs/manage-your-language-preferences/.
      • For those using language not supported (i.e. Greek). We suggest you choose UK English as your preference to get the desired display of day/month/year.

      The Atlassian Product Team

      Atlassian Update - 24 May 2021

Our research has shown that (1) significant portion of existing use cases for “date/time advanced settings” is to configure a date/time that makes sense for a specific location/country (2) cross geographic collaboration is a common and increasing use case that requires different date/time display between users within the same instance. To better adapt our product to this, we’ll progressively roll-out the following changes in upcoming days.

For those using language not supported (i.e. Greek). We suggest you choose UK English as your preference to get the desired display of day/month/year.
      • As part of shifting such setting to the user level, in long term, we’ll remove the advanced admin setting of custom date/time format (which currently can be found under: System->User Interface->Look and feel->Date/time format). In the interim, warning message of “advanced date picker settings will no longer be supported” will appear.

Unable to change the due date format in the pop-up view for Jira projects.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. In the Advanced Settings, change the date format to any format. (see below for format used in this example)

      Expected Results

The due date should be in the format configured (dd.MM.yy)

      Actual Results

The due date remains in the same American format (yyyy-mm-dd)

      Notes

This problem also affects other features that use dates, such as the Time Tracking feature. When logging work, the date field also does not respect the settings applied:

      • Configuration:
      • Actual results:

This only happens in the backlog issue view screen. In the issue, details view the format is as configured. It also affects the ISO8601 standard in Date Picker (Sunday first day of the week instead of Monday).

There is currently no workaround for this.

[JRACLOUD-68381] New Issue View does not respect Jira's Advanced Settings Date Format

KC Wong added a comment -

So, Atlassian has the Look and Feel date/time format settings and also the decades old date/time format properties in Advanced Settings.

And then when you create new UIs you ignore all of them?

And then you tie a hardcoded format to the user profile language settings? That each user has to change manually?

Why this has not yet been fixed since this issue is here since 2017

Where is the Product Owner that is not looking into old issues?

Given that this issue has been closed in favor of a workaround, has a new issue been opened for a proper fix?

Can someone clarify if my understanding is correct? Based on this issue, it seems that date/time formatting feature under "look and feel" doesn't actually do anything. Instead, the recommended workaround is for us to ask each of our users to set their own locale. Our organization uses ISO8601 for dates. It would be nice if we could set that as the default for our users.

This is completely retarded. I want to use Jira with UK/US locale, but I do not want American date format or AM/PM nonsense.

The workaround of 24 May 2021 doesn't work: we have people using different locale (French, UK, Bulgarian,...) but everybody still see the dates in american format... while we have no american people working with us...

If the recommended workaround to change date format is to change locale then I would kindly request that other locales be added.

For example, Canada has standardized on ISO-8601 YYYY-MM-DD yet we are forced to choose between English (CA) and English (UK) neither of which use this date format.

I have opened a new ticket https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-78409 to reflect this.

All of you posting lately - this issue is closed.

The clever folks at Atlassian do not want to solve this issue.

They have opened two new issues (https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-76814 and https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-71611)

They hope that nobody sees this so they can also close these two, concluding that nobody needs this to work.

I can only encourage you to upvote the new issues and let out some steam over there.
