As a developer, I would like to NOT have the detail view pop-up when selecting a card on an Agile board so that I don't loose screen real-estate by showing details I don't want to see, because I typically open the issue in a new browser tab to see all of the details and/or make edits anyway.
As a SCRUM Master, I would like the detail view to display so that I don't have to continuously open new tabs to view each issue when discussing issues as a team in the daily standup.
As can be seen, the role of the user plays a significant part in how this feature is typically used. The proposed "solution" is to make the display of the detail a USER PREFERENCE that can be enabled or disabled per board (either Kanban or Scrum)
Similar to GHS-10182 - however, that request wanted to make it an ADMIN function to disable the detail view per board, which does not fit with a sub-set of users.
Workaround
To hide Issue Detail View, you can add it to your Administration > System > Announcement banner (under User Interface):

Disclaimer: The workaround may cause unexpected JIRA behavior. In that case, simply remove it from the Announcement Banner will revert the changes.

STUPID, STUPID, STUPID popups. Why did you take away the ability to open the issue in full screen when I click on it.
So the new view went from a skinny modal view to a full screen view but only widens the form's content by an inch at the most. I have as much whitespace as I do content. Hopefully I can find the themes and at least darken border. All of this whitespaces is burning my eyes out.

I tested it and it works. However, I can not activate it permantly since we have multiple teams in the company working with our JIRA. They may want to configure the "legacy" behaviour by individual board.

Jira developers fundamentally don't understand how modals should work nor apparently even the basics of UI design.

The stupid "detail view" is quite possibly my biggest pet peeve with Jira. Whenever we're in a team meeting, sharing the screen, there's never enough "screen real estate" to show enough info in the detail view for all the various cards we need to discuss (without a whole lot of scrolling up/down and can't see all info on the screen at once) and/or we don't have all the desired fields/info on the screen ... and the more one tries to fix one of those problems, the more it increases the other problem! So, in effect, we always just have to "click through" that horrible detail screen to open the Jira card in full-screen mode. For cloud users at least, there is now a "new issue view" available by clicking your profile avatar in the bottom left corner, then personal settings, then enable "New Issue View" under the Jira labs section.
This change isn't exactly what is being asked for here in this issue, but it does solve my personal complaint (screen real estate being taken up by the issue view).
@Trina S: Most web browsers have a setting to specify if Ctrl+Click opens in a background tab or a foreground one. Ctrl+Shift+Click usually flips the behaviour.

With regards to the Atlassian updates on 1/29/19, the Ctrl+click solution opens the issue in a separate tab.In Chrome, it appears to open behind the active tab and focus does NOT shift to the new tab. I believe the ideal solution, when you do add this to the development queue, is an option or setting that acts as follows: (1) user single-clicks on an issue ID hyperlink, (2) the active window/tab is replaced with the full page view of the selected issue. This would be a single click solution.
I posted some time ago with some client-side scripts to overcome this.

If you have admin rights on your server, you can also put javascript hacks in the announcement banner of your Jira instance to fix these kinds of UX issue.

As a PO I want to quickly make changes to the priority as well as making short-cut edits (ie updating labels) to my tickets without having to load each ticket's detail view

I click that panel away at least 100 times a day.
100 clicks a day
500 clicks a week
45 weeks x 500 clicks = 22,500 clicks a year.
It's painful. This absolutely needs to be a user preference.
@Michael Tokar @Martin Jopson - This is a feature which is highly desired, still 3 years later, to be implemented. Your consumers aren't interested in ways how to "hack" around this, rather we prefer a solution, which will ultimately benefit you and other JIRA developers in the long run.
I do hope you consider this menial fix to improve the quality of your product.
Imagine the time that would be saved it this was addressed. It's so jarring in meetings when trying to run a grooming session where the details panel is not necessary. Great suggestions in this thread, pick one and go.

I even don't want the board to remember the last issue I clicked on. But I guess that's out of scope for this suggestion.
But just give me my board without making it jump all the time and without having to click 2x to open any issue please.

I'm using Chrome's Styler extension where I'm basically doing the same, but that fixes it on my machine alone.
What I (we) need is a permanent solution to this from Atlassian, and it doesn't seem like it will happen any time soon.

I added this rule to AdBlock:
atlassian.net##div#ghx-detail-view
Replace atlasian.net with the domain where you host your jira and the detail view will be treated as an ad, aka never shown
