Problem Definition
Special characters are not allowed in Confluence usernames as those users will not be able to create content, like spaces, but these user accounts can still be synchronized to Confluence via an external directory.
The end result is it appears that there are no issues with the user accounts until the user attempts to create content.
Suggested Solution
Implement a fail when attempting to synchronize external accounts with special characters rather than letting the sync complete

When making decisions about what to prioritize and work on, we combine your feedback and suggestions with insights from our support teams, product analytics, research findings, and more. This information, combined with our medium- and long-term product and platform vision, determines what we implement and its priority order.
Unfortunately, this suggestion didn’t make it to the roadmap this time and we are closing it.
