Assigning and tracking ownership on Service Accounts in Atlassian Cloud for improved accountability

      Problem

Currently, Atlassian Cloud do not provide a native way to assign or track an owner for service accounts.

These accounts are non-human entities often used by multiple teams for critical automations and business integrations.

The lack of ownership creates several operational challenges:

      • No Accountability: Difficulty identifying who is responsible for maintaining or troubleshooting a specific service account.
      • Operational Risk: When an integration fails, there is no clear contact point, slowing down incident resolution.
      • Compliance Gaps: Increased risk during security reviews and audits as ownership is tracked manually in external spreadsheets or documentation, which is error-prone.

      Suggested Solution

Introduce a native feature in Atlassian Cloud (Admin Hub/Directory) that allows administrators to:

      1. Assign Owners: Designate one or more managed users as the "Owner" or "Technical Contact" for a service account.
      1. Visibility: Display ownership details directly within the service account configuration or administration view.
      1. Metadata for Governance: Enable the use of ownership metadata for auditing, reporting, and automated governance workflows.

      Why This Is Important

For enterprise customers operating at scale, service accounts are critical infrastructure. Managing these accounts without native ownership tracking introduces significant operational overhead and governance risks.

Providing this feature ensures that every non-human account is linked to a responsible party, aligning with security best practices and enterprise readiness.

      Workaround

Currently there is no known workaround for this behavior. A workaround will be added here when available.
