Support the migration of Assets (formerly Insights) for Jira data

    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

Currently, there is no option to migrate all data from Assets For Jira from Server to the cloud.

      Suggested Solution

      • Support the export/import of Assets for Jira data
      • Ability to migrate Assets for Jira data using Jira Cloud Migration Assistant
      • Ability to migrate Assets for Jira data using full Jira XML export/Import

      Why this is important

      • Assets for Jira is largely used in Server environments and several customers rely heavily on its features
      • When we perform the migration from Server to Cloud, we are hoping to minimize the data loss after the migration.

            Thanks for the great news.

This features is really needed, can you be more precise about the "mid year" term?

Is it possible to join a beta version or an EAP?

            Hello 103579c89d5e ,

is there any news about this in the meantime?

Almost half a year after the Server has gone out of support, it would be cool to slowly get a solution for the native asset migration, in which, at best, a 1-to-1 migration while keeping the keys (analogous to a project migration in Jira) is provided.

I'm not sure how the link you posted helps.  I've reached out to Atlassian and have only been given a link to reach out to one of their partners from their Cloud Migration Accelerator.  It's supposed to be a set price to help migrate but is heavily taxed with additional add-on fees.

A direct solution to the problem would be helpful for everyone here.

I am removing my vote and watching for this. Our team has moved on. If I could talk to our team a few years back, I would've heavily advised against using this add-on in the first place. They announced shutting down server, people move to the cloud, and yet years later there is still no official support for something that others were able to step in and get done. That's just shameful. The announcement in May was that they're working on it. I just don't believe them. We've moved on and I make sure nothing new we have come through our pipes ever gets put in Assets. We come up with alternate solutions. Its just not worth it as they clearly don't care about supporting this. Here we are, server almost 100% gone, years into its slow end, and there is still no official migration support. Somebody messed up years ago with priority assignment. You all have fun with this, but we are out.

We're testing the app right now and received great support from the Twinit team. So big thx to them. First impression is that the app delivers as promised and some more...Migrating insight data from server/datacenter to cloud is just a few clicks(believe it or not) and is indeed a lifesaver for our migration.

So again... Thx Gia and the rest of the team.(and no...I am in no way connected to Twinit )

As someone has already mentioned, "This must be a bad joke".  We are forced to migrate to the cloud but are unable to for a long time because one app that we rely heavily on is not yet ready for the cloud.

Hi all, thank you for following up. I can confirm this is an active workstream that our teams are currently working on. At this stage, we're aiming to have an early candidate (EAP and/or Beta) by mid year to allow customers to migrate their basic Assets data from the schema export files from server/DC. All going well, we'll be looking to make this publicly available as a fast follow. Please note that in the spirit of iterative releases, we will incrementally increase the scope of the data migrated. As an example - the first iteration will likely not include re-establishing Jira references or automation rules and we will be looking to add those as we continue working on future releases.

            Hi 7260236ab89d,

As we are already into a new financial year, can you share recent updates on support for Insight data migration? We have many customers willing to move to Atlassian cloud but are currently stuck and are willing to explore other options outside Atlassian. Does Atlassian have a valid statement for the Insight migration capabilities timelines, and does it co-relate with the end of server/push to Atlassian Cloud timelines?

            Kind Regards

I have a lot of customers in Jira data center and they like the Asset (formerly Insight tool) but migrating the tables is a problem and very very time consuming. This customer cannot move to the cloud due to sensitivity of their data.

Agree this is critical. Atlassian chose to phase out the "server" products, so it is reasonable to expect you to have a migration path.   Whilst I think the planned timeline was excellent (and perhaps generous) this lack of an ability to migrate the data is a major oversight.

As we move into 2023, there will be increasing pressure from Server and DC clients to move to the cloud, and this process is currently very manual and can be very error-prone.  Are there any updates on when we can expect this functionality so we can adjust effort estimates and runbooks appropriately?

            Hi everyone,

any news on this? I am trying to import many different objecttypes from Server to Cloud. There are many links between objecttypes, not to mention the linking into Jira Insight Custom fields. Hi, We've following issues:

            1. With each import of CSV into cloud, it creates new duplicate records and key number gets generated.
              1. How to reset the key numbers? OR import like importing Jira issues with key as a update to the records?
            2. The objects don't get mapped  when doing an import. It ignores that.

            Hello everyone,

I've just came up to this. Which is the best strategy to migrate Insight data from Server to Cloud at the moment? CSV?

In this way I would lose all KEYs references and this would be a large time-consuming operation. Our customer may not appreciate this.

            Any other solutions?

            Thank you!

The first year of Insight Integration was focussed on the basics - User experience, Better Import capabilities, legacy App migration etc...

Now, we are working on finalising the roadmap for next year and enabling migration from DC remains high on the priority list along with other key items like scalability, performance etc. We will be starting investigations of how best we can support the customers as they move Insight data from DC to Cloud and I will post a follow up update in due course.

This honestly comes across as something that should have been ready before a huge announcement of shutting down server. They are probably just going to ignore the problem because it will go away eventually on its own. People will either move to the cloud and put up with how horrible transferring Insight data is, or they won't. If this wasn't just part of Atlassian I'd drop the product entirely for not supporting the migration the way they have and find a different way to address this. I have honestly lost a ton of faith in Atlassian over the whole handling of migration stuff. How insanely atrocious it is to get Insight into cloud is a large part of it.

It is now 2022, "but we anticipate this happening in 2022".  Do you have any updates on the status of this ticket?

Atlassian, how can you push your customers to your cloud when a major part of the data can not be migrated?
Some Jira instances rely heavily on Insight data and are too complex for manual CSV imports where we have to import each object type individually.

Please plan the development of this feature request.

I hope this will be solved before 02/02/2023... homegrown problem...

If there is no built-in way to do this, please provide customers like us with absolutely detailed manual steps on how to do the arduous and tricky task of

            1. individually exporting each object type
            2. recreating it
            3. re-linking ALL of my past Jira issues/tickets with the new object IDs

While on the Server I might have database access, on the Jira Cloud side all access and customizations are strongly restricted, hence making our job very very difficult or essentially impossible.

From what I gather, the absolute biggest issue is how to re-link my objects to issues.

Can also consider some financial incentives for the customers please. Kinda feel like after selling out to Atlassian, the long time customers have been left in the ditch.

For a product of this pricing, and this pretty straightforward migration, it's disappointing there's no tool available.

            Please we need this.

How can this feature can stay at status "Gathering interest" ? It is called as a major feature for Support Team ! With Jira server, it is strongly recommanded to use Insight + Automation for Jira and all our configuration and developments are based on them.

All issues are linked to Insight objects for "better resolution" (as said in Insight description). But there is no way to migrate Insight objects and then migrate issues ! It is strongly recommended to migrate now to cloud but no tools are made to do it for included Jira addon with a "premium" offer ? and imports automation take only CSV or JSon ? what about all others import operations ?

In my mind, there is no way to validate a cloud migration with this.

While we can work around it with a relatively small environment it seems like this should be a core feature of Service Management Migrations
