Allow Microsoft Graph API integration for Incoming Mail handlers (JSM) using the client credentials flow

    • We collect Jira Service Desk feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

Right now, with the implementation of the feature request JSDSERVER-12419, Jira uses the authorization code flow when integrating with MS Graph API for incoming mail handlers. We would like Jira to use the client credentials flow instead.

This is important because some organizations cannot use delegated permissions and they need to use the application permissions instead. This way, no user credentials are involved and the flow would be based on tokens only.

I'm happy to announce that starting from version 5.17 Jira Service Management will now support Client Credential Grant Flow (CCGF) as a new outgoing OAuth 2.0 integration type for email authorization.

We're adding support for OAuth 2.0 Clients Credentials Grant Flow to make it easier to set up incoming and outgoing mail in Jira Data Center. While the fully available version is planned for release with Jira 10, early adopters can already use it in Jira 9.16 (accessible via a feature flag). If you're keen on trying out the early version and want more information, feel free to reach out to me at mmiodek@atlassian.com.
