external links to open in new window

      Atlassian Update – 3 September 2019

      Hi everyone,

      We've added the ability to open external links in a new tab in your browser and made this option default. However, if you like all links to open in the same tab, you can easily change this in YourUserProfile > Profile > Preferences > External links.

      The functionality will be available starting with Jira 8.4.

      Some users need to have external links in Description / Comments to open in new browser window.
      Looks like this should be per-user configurable.

      Workaround
      Use the middle-click on your mouse if you have a three-button mouse, ctrl-click on Windows/Unix, or cmd-click on Mac.

            Not opening external links in a new tab goes against the way Jira is expected to be used. External links are not on-site navigation, thus should not be treated that way. External links, in the vast majority of cases, contain additional information to clarify Jira issues and users have been very vocal about wanting to view both the issue and the link contents side by side.

            The workaround is not enough as this is not the usual way anyone would expect these links to work.

             

            I constantly struggle to remember to press modifier keys to get my external links to open in a new tab and grit my teeth as Jira takes its sweet 10+ seconds to reload when I navigate back to it...
