Atlassian status as of November 2023

      Hey everyone,

Hope you're well! My name is April and I'm a product manager in JSW. We've added the ability to see subtasks in Company-Managed Projects and it's currently rolling out. If this is the project type you're using, opt into our enhanced backlog to start seeing subtasks. You can learn more about it here: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-articles/Coming-soon-View-subtasks-directly-on-your-backlog/ba-p/2506271.

If you have any feedback, don't hesitate to contact me at achi@atlassian.com or set up a quick chat with me here

Unfortunately, we aren't in a position at the moment to show subtasks in the backlog of Team-Managed Projects. We're currently planning and will prioritise the next few months. If you'd like to see subtasks/child issues in a Team-Managed Project, please vote on this ticket here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-26064. This ticket will be for Company-Managed Projects and we'll be closing it as it's been completed.

Once again, your feedback is valuable and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any suggestions or questions!

      Regards,

      April

We'll share more information as we go so please follow this ticket for updates. Don't hesitate to comment or contact me at achi@atlassian.com.

Is there a way to hide the subtask on the backlog view on Jira Cloud without using the JQL quick filter?

            Hey e01fda4cde7d

Thanks for your response. I'll relay this back to my team. I agree with your goal stated where there should eventually be consistency across JSW. This is hopefully a first step towards that and we'll take your feedback into account in our prioritisation.

Feel free to reach out to me anytime at achi@atlassian.com or https://calendly.com/april-atlassian/jsw if you're up for a Zoom chat.

            Regards,

            April

            Thanks April.
I have reviewed https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-15991 and it seems to cover the calculation of subtags but only for estimated time - not for story points.

We use Story Points instead of Time Estimations for the same reasons Atlassian states here: https://www.atlassian.com/agile/project-management/estimation#:~:text=Story%20points%20are%20units%20of,work%2C%20and%20risk%20or%20uncertainty.

When we plan our sprint only with story points - no time estimation. It would make our sprint planning and overall overview easier if the given story points per sub-task would be part of the workload by assignee pop-up as well as the backlog sprint rollup badges and reports. Goal would be to have consistency across Jira to reflect progress and effort to see transparently open, in progress and done sub-task. Every sub-task is part of the journey to deliver the wished value to clients.

            Hey e01fda4cde7d ,

Love it! Glad it helps. Please let me know if you have any feedback related to it. Once again, happy to chat here if you'd like to give any feedback. In regards to your sentiment about the overall sprint story point calculation, can you please elaborate on where you need it and what you use it for? E.g. do you expect it to be in the backlog sprint rollup badges, the reports, workload by assignee modal, or everywhere? (image of the backlog sprint rollup badges below)

We're in the midst of prioritising and don't have plans to add subtasks to sprint calculations everywhere yet. However, as a part of this subtasks work, we're adding the ability to see subtasks in the workload by assignee modal (this feature request here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-15991 ). Hopefully, this is bringing into the right direction though by giving subtasks some more love.

Once you respond, we can make another feature request ticket based on which area you want subtasks to be included in if it doesn't exist already.

            Regards,

            April

Awesome, thanks it's a huge win to have now the full transparency on subtask and story points in the backlog. But I agree with Michael, for proper planning the story points of the subtasks need to be part of the overall sprint story point calculation to achieve really 100% transparency and make planning even easier.

Could you please check if it's feasible? Thank you!

I can see this feature in my project. However points from subtasks are not added to the summary of a sprint.

Is there a way to configure backlog, so the points from subtasks are added to the summary?

I'd like to share our use case that highlights the need for story points being calculated as part of the workload screen. We have our analytics team in Jira who run A/B tests that span weeks. Throughout our sprint cycle we have some subtasks that need to be worked on by various contributors to support the testing, validation and reporting of these tests. In an effort to plan for the team effectively I need to consider these subtasks in their capacity to avoid over committing them. If the subtask story points populated in the workload this would allow me to set my team up for success and plan them to their velocity. That means, we would also need the story points for subtasks to be applied to any sprint reporting which it currently is not.
