copy and pasting web images will not attach the image to the page

NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

      Steps to reproduce

      1. Search for an image on the web
      2. Right click and choose copy
      3. Open the editor
      4. Right click and choose paste
      5. Save page

The pasted image will display correctly but the image will not be attached to the page. Storage format of the image will look like below.

      <p><br /></p>
      <p><ac:image>
          <ri:url />
        </ac:image></p>
      <p><br /></p>

Confluence is expecting the URL of the image but it is empty.
Reproduced on IE, FF, Safari and Chrome
For details, can refer to the following video

      Workaround:

      Workaround 1
An easy workaround for this is to:

      1. Paste the image from web into Paint.
      2. Then select the image in paint and Copy it again
      3. Paste it on your Confluence page.

The image will be saved as an attachment.

      Workaround 2

      1. Copy the image link
      2. Add the image as web link (Insert Image >> Image from the web >> paste the image url >> click insert)

I've written a python script to solve it almost. Here is my GitHub repo: [ConfluencePictureDump|https://github.com/yao177/ConfluencePictureDump/blob/main/README.md.] Welcome bugs report & PR!

just my personal thoughts driven by some frustration with Atlassian not really taking action on this other than to say "you should use cloud"

this issue has been open for nine years... if they wanted to fix it, they would have.

i think we can comment all we want, Atlassian isn't going to do anything about this particular issue.

            Hi @Joe,

Copy from an email and Paste into a new or existing Issue is a pretty common task.

After pasting in the Issue HTML box, the image is shown as pasted, the problem is that is not saved (it gives an error).

Is there a reason why Atlassian would know of the existence of this bug and not solve it in one of it´s main products?

            Is it difficult to solve?

Why Atlassian would not fix this?

Atlassian will never fix this, you are fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

            Hi @admin Team,

This bug drops down considerably users productivity.

The workarounds do not raise that productivity.

When pasted the image, iniatially shows up in Confluence/Jira, the problem is that is bot being saved.

Could we try again to raise the ticket with Atlassian to solve it?

            Thank you!

My 'easy' workaround is to take a screenshot of the region of the screen with the image I want to attach. How you do that depends on the operating system, I suppose. In GNOME I press Shift+Ctrl+PrtSc and select the region I want to screenshot, and then I just paste it in to the ticket. It really is easy, as long as you and your colleagues remember to do it.

Just another one of the 1000 papercuts...
