[CONFSERVER-23322] Editing attachments in Office fails with Google Chrome

Thanks for your patience on this issue. In Confluence 6.11, we’ve replaced the Edit in Office option with a new feature that allows you to edit any file attached to a Confluence page using a desktop application, then automatically save the file back to Confluence.

You can now edit Microsoft Offices documents, Photoshop files, Keynote presentations — any attached file with a compatible application installed on your computer.

Check out the release notes to read more about this feature.

Found we are unable to edit Office 2010 documents with current version of Chrome.

I am a pilot user for Office 365 (on purpose) and found that the 'edit in office' works with Office 365 and Chrome.

For those on lower versions of Office, an alternative is to use the add-on "GoEdit" until you upgrade.

            Hi all,

I'm pleased to let you know that we've started work on this issue.

As previously mentioned, we've decided to make a significant investment to overhaul this feature. Users will be able to edit not only Office documents but most types of file, and have their changes saved back to Confluence. We will be working to ensure the new functionality works across browser and OS versions.

In the interim, please checkout our compatibility matrix in the Atlassian Support Documentation to confirm current functionality.

            Best,

I'm on Windows 7 Pro with Word 2013, Chrome  65.0.3325.181, and Confluence 5.9.11. The Edit Document feature works for just fine for Word documents when used from the location of the inserted Word document on the Confluence page. We had to disable the ability to open Office documents from the attachments lists due to a large number of user complaints, so I don't know if that works for me or not.

Hm, maybe the combination of Office 2010 with an unsupported Windows version is the issue. When using Office 2010 using Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 is not supported.

And I don't have to use the link on the attachment page. The edit button on the main page works well.

@Jonathan Did you ever try "Edit in Office" in Chrome when viewing the Attachments page (Page menu > Attachments). Works here with latest Chrome using Confluence Server 6.6.2. No need for a pretty expensive addon which relies on a local installed component.

Having this issue (together with Firefox support) resolved, would be great. Hint just remove the check for Chrome when previewing a an office file... Should be a quick fix for over 500 votes

@Jenny Millman: Will this be on the 2018 roadmap?

@Matin Schiemann: GoEdit (paid add-on) is the only workaround I know of for "edit in office" functionality in Chrome.

            Matin,

apart from the "Edit in Office" option not being displayed when previewing a office document in Chrome, editing office documents in Chrome directly from a Confluence page works when using other features (eg. List Attachments macro, Attachments overview page). The main issue now is, that "Edit in Office" is not working for Firefox anymore.

You might be interested in a user macro listing all attachments of a page with preview, editing & download options. It hides the "Edit in Office" link when using Firefox.

            Hi Atlassian,

whatever it means that this issue is tagged as a "suggestion" now: Please bear in mind, that most of your longterm customers bought your product as platform independent, including Chrome for editing attachments. The information that Chrome does not work for this feature came way after you sold the product. I would naively expect that you do everything possible to keep your promise. The history of this issue prrofs quite the contrary.

Anyway, please treat this issue as an urgent problem, not as a suggestion which is optional to solve.

            Regards

Chrome works for us, too! See Jan's 21/Jul/2017 post

I followed the steps to install FireFox with the WebDAV Launcher as documented here:

            https://confluence.atlassian.com/conf54/confluence-user-s-guide/creating-content/working-with-the-office-connector/installing-the-firefox-add-on-for-the-office-connector

That worked, however I noticed all of the formatting (such as highlighting) didn't make it.

I tried Chrome and it worked like a champ (it did pull over highlighting). So Chrome not only works, it appears to work better than the FireFox + WebDAV solution. I suggest the documentation should be updated.

In order for us to have it working in chrome the user need to allow the "external protocol" ms-word the first time the user clicks on the "Edit Document" link.
However if you didn´t do that, chrome will remember your choice and won´t open any ms-word link anymore. The configuration for that is somewhat hidden as well. So to make sure it´s allowed you need to close chrome, open the file "Local State" located in Users/<userid>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data" and update the key ms-word to false

             "ms-word":false

This was the cause for us why it worked for some users and not for others.

i do not blame them for not providing solutions. I blame them for ignoring this issue since 2013, even though it has 391 votes by now. Matin,

it's easy to blame Atlassian on this one, but the issue is quite difficult to solve. I assume, that the newer Chrome version are able to support Office editing & not a fix/change by Atlassian. So, apart from getting this issue solved by Atlassian, what happens when the next Chrome version skips this new feature. One should check, if this fix is related to Google or Atlassian & then document it accordingly. And make that "Edit in Office" option available in Chrome...

Your awesome users stumble through speculations for years, and still you are not sure what to say? Do we not deserve answers for social reasons, or if not the at least for the tens of thousand dollars/euros/yens we send in your direction? You do disapoint me, just on this one issue. Matin

            Hi,

as written before, editing in Chrome doesn't work via file preview, as Confluence forbids editing in Chrome by hiding the "Edit in Office" option.

You have to use the "Edit in Office" buttons in the attachment overview page

            or an attachment list macro.

When I click on either of these buttons, Office 2013 opens & loads the file. Any change is written back to Confluence creating a new version of the attached file.

Currently, I'm on Chrome 52.0.2743.82. We are using Confluence 5.9.11 on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Maybe you've disabled Launch Application for that file type in Chrome. Just tested with a PPTX and it works OK with both a PPTX and an XLSX. When I selected the PowerPoint Edit In Office button it asked me if I wanted to Launch the associated application.

You don't see the button in Chrome for a file preview.
However the button is displayed for files in a file list macro.

Has there been progress toward providing Excel doc editing capabilities in Chrome?

It seemed like one of the comments indicated progress (worked for some, not others).

In any case is it on the roadmap for Confluence?

            thx,

jbusi652678043, I believe that the URI scheme required to make this work needs Office 2010SP2 or higher. Could that be it?

            Dear All,
For unknown reason Chrome seems to work for some of our users and not for some others. (same confluence version, same chrome version)
Is there a specific setup to apply to get this feature properly working with Chrome ?

            Thank you for your feedback

We are running Confluence 5.9.7 and Edit in Office indeed works.

            Chrome 50.0.2661.102 m (64-bit)

There is a small issue though; Excel will display "We're sorry, someone updated the server copy..." when first saving after opening a document. If you press Keep my version, it will save succesfully and further saves will work without issue. This will happen again the next time the file is opened in Excel.

wasnt working for us on Chrome 50 & 5.9.2 but upgraded to 5.9.8 and we are in business. Finally! (Although Word 2013 has been crashing occasionally... need to figure that out separately.)

I am on Chrome 50. Couple of days ago, I occasionally discovered I can edit office attachments.
There was nothing about it in Atlassian release notes, so seems something changed on Chrome side.

It seems that Chrome 50 is supporting editing Office attachments out of the box without installing any addons/plugins. No WebDav Launcher is needed.

As Confluence doesn't display any "Edit in Office"-Link in Previews when using Chrome, this should be fixed by Atlassian to check for a Chrome 50+ browser and in this case, display the Edit link.

You can test the Edit in Office feature with Chrome 50 by using the attachments overview or an embedded "Attachments" macro.

            Hello,
Could we at least get an update on this?
People are counting on this feature so if its out of your scope please let us know so we can act accordingly.
            Thanks
