Allow Images to be inserted inline or in a sentence in the New Editor

    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Status update 22 Feb 2024

      Hi everyone!

Glad to see some of you have already started seeing the inline image feature.

Looks like the first release is not meeting all your requirements i.e being able to click on an inline image (without a hyperlink) and seeing the full size image.

The team has heard your feedback and this work is currently in the final stages of development and is undergoing testing as I type this.

This should be out very soon (starting release within 2 weeks)

      Status update 21 Feb 2024

      Hi everyone!

I’m excited to announce that we have heard your feedback and are now releasing inline images in confluence!

Take a look at this community post to see how it works, ask questions and provide any feedback you might have.

Some of you may already have access to this feature, but the rollout is still in progress over the next month or so. If you don’t see it on Confluence today, rest assured that it will be available soon!

NB: Inline images may not be viewable on mobile at the moment, but our dedicated mobile team is actively working to resolve this.

We deeply value your patience as we have continually prioritised and re-prioritised our roadmaps over the years.

      Status Update 3 Feb 2022

👋 Hi - I’m a Divya Sriram, a PM on the Confluence team. I recognize that it's been a while since you've heard from the team, so I'm here with the update we owe you.

Solving for images to be inserted inline is on our priority list. Currently, we are focused on critical work to improve table formatting and performance for Confluence Cloud pages - problems that are also affecting a very broad pool of users.

We hope to start working on this soon and acknowledge that the delay on implementing this feature is frustrating for many of you. We will keep you updated on our progress.

      Thank you,

      Divya

      Status Update 13 March 2020

As we're working through this feature and others, we wanted to address a lot of your concerns as to the future of the new editor and legacy editor.

Please read our recent community post here: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-Cloud-articles/Change-to-your-content-is-in-your-hands/ba-p/1324476

      Thanks,
      Avinoam

      Description

This suggestion tracks interest for inserting images inline in the new Fabric editor.

      Workaround

      1. Go to Emoji in the toolbar
      2. Click Add New Emoji
      3. Set a emoji shortcut
      4. Upload the file you want to add in-line

      Notes

      • Pages migrated from old editor to the new one, that contains inline images, might stop displaying those images. They'll show up as inlineExtension in published mode, instead.
      • This behavior is also present when importing word documents as pages - Images that have text on the same line will be replaced by inlineExtension placeholders on the final page. (This can be replicated using the annexed .docx file)
      • [^this is an inline image.docx]

The ask is, as I understand it, to be able to insert images within lists, macros, and otherwise improve the handling of images when they're meant to be embedded within text as opposed to within their own block.

Tamim, or I guess anyone at Atlassian...what was the problem you expected to be solved by this change? I'm sure there are some use-cases out there that would benefit from having a really small image I have to click on to see in a modal...but not any I've ever seen.

            To clarify:

            • I need to be able to put images anywhere I can put text.
            • I need be able to change the size of that images to whatever I want, and decide if text will be pushed above\below or run alongside.
            • I need to be able to make the decision "this does not work\look good\fit" myself and not be arbitrarily limited by what you think I need.

I think it's been said already, but this is all stuff I recall we used to be able to do without much of an issue. I get that new editors might be needed for technical reasons and parity takes time to achieve; getting here should have been P0 and certainly before other enhancements. As my Dad used to say "you need to finish your homework before you can go out and play".

If you need help, I would say borrow some of the engineers working on the AI or whiteboards stuff...no one wants that crap anyway.

Unless I am missing a feature or step, this is NOT a solution for our team and we will still have to continue limping along on the legacy editor. Biggest issue is not being able to add or clearly control spacing between images and the difficulty in getting images to match in size without causing cascading problems with images on next lines.

edit: Apparently unable to add the example images to better illustrate our issues...so adding...

The 'in-line' images might as well be called 'thumbnail setting' as they are WAY too small even on Heading 1 sizing.  Having to manually resize each image to try and match each other when previously we could simple select one of three presets to easily match while still having the ability to set the dimensions was/is ideal. It is very difficult to add new images between existing ones where previously you only needed to place the cursor where you needed then drag and drop and select the size.  What used to be a 2-3 step process of seconds now frustratingly takes a minute or 2 and multiple clicks to choose text wrapping plus resize 'sliding'.

I see no way to easily add 5-20 images 'in line' of equal viewable size in the new editor without fighting against the editor constantly and becoming overly frustrated.  Seems like a step back to me in this direction.

Thanks for finding that bug ee73467dddea - I've passed the info on to the team who will be resolving it asap.

I truly appreciate everyone's constructive feedback. It helps to guide our thinking and make our product better❤️

Moving forward, I'll be closing this ticket. Should we identify the need for further improvements, we can open a separate ticket dedicated to addressing those enhancements.

I just discovered an issue. If a small image was placed in a table cell (without other content), then it becomes very small if the page is edited. To solve this, it has to be resized.

            Hi Tamim.

I don't prefer the text wrapping feature because I can't control when the text indents back to the left border. Instead, I would rather use a simple table. PS: unfortunately, the table borders can't be hidden (see https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-45670).

The new inline image feature is fine for me. The maximum size of 22x22px looks good. I only use inline images for images like icons, buttons and symbols.

ee73467dddea 14b9027daece thanks for the constructive feedback

The idea behind keeping the inline images smaller is to maintain the contextual integrity of the text itself. If you make the images larger, then the text is displaced and the line spacing increases.

To add larger images (almost) inline, you can resize the image smaller and then use "text wrap". Please let me know if this solution works for you?

Thanks for the update! Being able to click on the inline images will be a massive help. Will we also be able to resize them as well, or will they stay the same size as the text? In the initial release, they're kinda just "larger emoji" sized, and being able to scale up to at least, say 100x100, would be most excellent so that we can better see which image we might want to click on.

I agree with 126eb223f469, this is a partial solution.  Our team has been limping along on the legacy editor because the 'new' editor is not better for the majority of our documentation, including sections with numerous 'inline' images.

I tested with images of 8, 16, 24 and 32px high and wide. If the size is above 22x22px, it is scaled down to 22x22px. That's no problem for me, but I understand that Douglas wants control the size. A user setting could be added to define the default size that one likes to use, but an option to change the size of an image would also be good.
