NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Cloud. Using Confluence Server? See the corresponding bug report.

This may or may not be a duplicate of CONF-17621, about EXIF rotation, marked as "won't fix". I understand from that issue that there is some debate about whether this is Confluence's issue or a browser issue. Let me explain my experience.

      1. I take a picture with my iPhone, it displays it the correct way up
      2. I email it to myself, Gmail displays it the correct way up
      3. I accidentally import it into my Google Drive, it displays it the correct way up
      4. I download it to my Mac, it display it the correct way up
      5. I import it into Confluence, it displays it the wrong way round
      6. I start writing this ticket, and have an idea or two...
      7. I access it in Chrome using a file:// URI, it displays it the right way up
      8. I boot a Windows 7 VM and ping it over there, it displays it the right way up (perhaps a file:// URI in IE6 would be the nail in the coffin?)

      Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback on this issue thus far. This is certainly an issue which has done its round on the internet over the years for many browser and application vendors alike, with each pointing the finger at each other as to whether the application or browser should observe the EXIF rotation metadata.

The obvious solution is for all browsers to support the 'image-orientation' CSS, however after many years this is still only supported by Firefox.
We have explored no less than 6 different solutions to this issue as each brings pros and cons in terms of performance, behaviour and complexity.
As a result of this exercise, it has been decided that image rotation would be done server side based on the EXIF rotation metadata.

The actual implementation is somewhat different for Server and Cloud deployments, and thus the rollout/delivery may occur at different times, however is high up in the queue right now.

Better late then never. I was signed up for the issue since 2015-2016, but now it's late cause I'm not going to update the confluence version we run. The ideas is to freeze on 5.x cause of the 6.x version has more windows-like design (common disease since everybody started to follow the MS lead and copied it's metro style), has higher HW requirements and has more unnecessary bells and whistles like shared edit.

I guess it's good that this is finally resolved after more than five years; although some (most?) of us still haven't got the fix as it's part of an "editing experience" that we don't have yet.

Just FYI, I work for a company that builds public-facing websites. My latest project asks the user to take a picture of themselves with their device and upload it. We had the same problem with rotation. We fixed it within a week. It's really not difficult.

@Jim Strange, yeh, I've been subscribed for this bug for years. But you see, if only minority of us is influenced it's a low priority. So better you your customers come and raise the bug to the top.

It's unbelievable that such a basic fix is beyond the skills of Atlassian's developers. Instead they've been spending their time on UI updates that increase the number of clicks needed to get things done, and make the software less intuitive.

What a depressing place to work Atlassian must be. They're clearly not remotely interested in the needs of their customers, and treat the whole Jira thing like some weekender hobby, "Ooh, I wonder if I could build THAT, just for shits and giggles?"

I advise all my customers not to use Jira, simply because I think their refusal to fix this simple bug is indicative of their approach as a whole.

Still waiting on a fix for this. Have to manually edit photos in Paint and Save without making changes to get Confluence to not rotate images into incorrect orientations.

This is such an annoying bug and it affects one of the most basic features of Confluence - being able to add an image to a page.  I can't believe it's still not fixed.

I have the same issue. When I upload vertical pictures to confluence they are still showing in horizontal orientation. If I download them they again show correct vertical orientation.  When uploading an original photo to Confluence the photo is not upright. Then uploading the photo once more, the photo orientation was upright, but photo was smaller.

Count us among the afflicted as well.  This is some serious junior level web development stuff...

If you have the money to buy Trello, you have the money to hire a couple of more devs on the Confluence team so things like this can get some attention.
