A commonly requested feature is for extra properties to specified and returned from LDAP, relating to a user; for example, a phone number, department name, even a JPG.

The information would then be accessed via a HashMap, etc., sitting on the LDAPUser object.

hjt: I understand that it is exhausting to maintain things in several places. But for now you can close this gap with an add-on (for example, “User Profiles for Confluence”).

Especially the lack of support for profile pictures is nasty. People here have to maintain their avatars twice and do not like it.

We would also like to see phone numbers on the "list" view of the employee directory - but it looks like t his issue has been around for about a year.
            Any updates?

Well, 16 months passed since your announcement. What's the status on this?
We would need this feature for our AD profile pictures and for fields like Manager, Department, etc.

m.junghanns: That is absolutely correct, our add-on can do much more and your opinion is totally fine.
Of course there are other add-ons in the Marketplace in addition to our add-on, but they may not cover all use cases.

@Detlef: Please don't get me wrong - the plugin you provide may offer much more features than just plain properties like phone number, department and other data that is already (as in our case) part of the user object in Active Directory, so please don't feel offended by my writing.
For me it is not understandable at all that it could take more than eight years of talking in this matter and still not seeing any progress on the Atlassian end. I'm doing a lot of PHP development and accessing AD via PHP is daily business for me. Why is it that the attributes "displayName", "sAMAccountName" and others are collected by Confluence, yet attributes like "department", "telephoneNumber" and so forth are not collected? It shouldn't be too hard to expand the data model to store this information and to collect the attributes from AD.
For me it is absolutely fine that people and companies release and sell plugins for Jira and Confluence that add extra value. But in this very case I have the feeling that Atlassian is neglecting to provide complete basic functionality in their Active Directory connector and leaving this field to others to develop commercial addons. I'm really disappointed if it comes to a point where I feel that an standard module lacks basic functionality for years and I would have to spend somewhere between 10-4800 extra $$ (depending on the user tier) to have this fixed....

Thanks dgamble for the recommendation of our add-on.

In the meantime, we also have released an extension for JIRA and renamed our add-on for Confluence. You will find it under the following name in the Marketplace: User Profiles for Confluence (fka User Profile Plugin)

The latest version also has a feature to synchronize user pictures (Avatars). For example, you can use the "thumbnailPhoto" attribute for Active Directory and "jpegPhoto" for OpenLDAP.

I hope we will see Confluence support additional user properties sync'ing from LDAP sometime soon - this would be a really nice enhancement?
