Some users with access to only Confluence are not being redirected to Confluence

      Summary

      User who are given access to Confluence only (while there are JIRA in the instance), will be redirected to JIRA Dashboard/Customer Portal (if the instance has JIRA Service Desk) when they try to access the instance's URL

      Environment

      JIRA v1000.1010.1

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Create a user and give Confluence access only (in default environment, include the user in "confluence-users" group only)
      2. login as the user
      3. Try to access the instance's URL (<instance-name>.atlassian.net)

      Expected Results

      User redirected to Confluence (<instance-name>.atlassian.net/wiki/discover/all-updates)

      Actual Results

      • User may receive a "Too Many Redirects" Error
      • OR, they are redirected to JIRA (<instance-name>.atlassian.net/secure/Dashboard.jspa) as a logged out user (can see log in button on top right)
      • OR, they're logged into the JIRA Service Management Customer Portal

      Notes

      This happened simultaneously with the appearance of this bug:

      • Unable to choose default homepage anymore in Atlassian Cloud

      Original Description

      In some states, user sites will stop redirecting users to the correct product based on their permissions. In particular, this means that users with access to Confluence but not JIRA will end up at the JIRA dashboard or the JIRA Service Desk anonymous user portal page instead of the Confluence dashboard.

            Addressed the symptom by not using the site URL within invitations.

            Back in 2021 we made a change to the Invitation emails to not direct users to the root site URL, instead directing the users directly to the specific products they were added to.

            This has drastically reduced the number of times users face the redirection issue where they don't have access to the landing product.

            Due to this reduction, we're going to move this issue to low priority and into a new ticket to track the core issue of not having access to the landing product separately. See https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/ID-8162 for more details.

            We've added the Home Product function back in - https://confluence.atlassian.com/cloud/set-your-site-homepage-873871363.html

            So admins can choose which default product all Users land in. You can select 'Confluence' and have all your users land there when they go to acme.atlassian.net. You can also customise your confluence home page, to help direct users to each project / space that they use.

            Kieran, could you elaborate on the short-term fixes that your team has planned?

            This bug affects my team as well. While our engineering team uses both Jira + Confluence, we are pushing the non-eng team to also start using Confluence to create a single "source of truth". Like Tony and Wendie said, apologizing for Atlassian and fielding questions from confused non-technical colleagues isn't fun.

            We are working on fixing this. Unfortunately it's more complex than we originally thought, so I'm moving it to our Long Term roadmap.

            Short term, we'll make some smaller fixes to help users get to the right products.

            Same Problem in our Cloud System. We´ve made a workaround and write in the personalized invite mail to our customer to use other link for login to first page, after registration. 

             

            But that´s just a short time workaround... hope that will be fixed soon. Thank you.

            Ditto to Tony's comment. Having to apologize to a customer for Atlassian for a bug is not fun. ETA on a fix would be appreciated.

            This bug completely derails our IT onboardings for new hires and puts me in the position of apologizing for Atlassian to a roomful of people multiple times a month, which I don't enjoy. I would very much appreciate an ETA on a fix.

            Same here. Having trouble with all our Confluence-only-users, too.

            For a High-Priority Bug there is not much action here ... any idea, when this will be solved ... or addressed?
