      Atlassian Update – 3 September 2018

      Hi everyone,

Thanks for your interest in this issue. This request is considered a potential addition to our longer-term roadmap. We'll typically review this request in about 12 months time, at which point we’ll consider whether we need to alter its status.

Meanwhile, you may consider a commercial third party app Template (Epic) cloner for Jira, which may be useful in your context.

For the nearest future we've decided to prioritize other areas of the Jira Server roadmap, including:

In the recent Jira Server releases we have also shipped some highly-voted features and improvements, including:

      • Filters and dashboards collaborative editing
      • Selectable delimiters in CSV export
      • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 support
      • iPv6 support
      • Faster Kanban boards
      • Refreshed projects and custom fields management pages in the admin's section

We hope that you appreciate our candid and transparent communication. You can learn more about our approach to highly voted server suggestions here.

      Issue

In JIRA, when we clone a parent issues containing sub tasks, user are given the option to automatically clone the Sub Tasks as well. However in Agile(GreenHopper) when we clone an Epic, the linked Stories does not get cloned as well.

Since the 'clone stories' option is not available at the current moment, users will have to clone the Epic and each of the linked stories manually, which can consume a lot of time.

      Suggestion

Hence, it will be great if we can implement the option to clone an Epic along with it's linked sub tasks as well.

      Workaround

One suggestion is to create an automation rule as described in the KB article below: https://confluence.atlassian.com/automationkb/automation-for-jira-writing-a-rule-that-clones-stories-linked-to-an-epic-when-the-epic-is-cloned-1235850506.html

          Form Name

[JSWSERVER-7721] When cloning an Epic, add the option to clone the linked Stories as well

Unfortunately, this is a Jira Server ticket, so it should be noted that the "Clone Epic Template for Jira" app doesn't seem to be available for Jira Server.

Also, the Clone Plus app is paid, and so has the unfortunate side effect of being ridiculously expensive given the way paid apps are priced.

That leaves me waiting on Atlassian, to implement a pretty straightforward concept.  It feels like an eternity, but to be fair, it has only been 8 years.

Although there are a lot of votes on this one, I am pretty sure this won't be implemented by Atlassian. Their focus for new features is on Cloud. Server or Data Center are only available for those, who can't for any reasons migrate to Cloud. There will be bug fixes and maybe some new features for admins or performance improvements (also stated by Atlassian some years ago). For such features, numerous apps are available on the Marketplace, free and paid.

We also developed one to solve this problem: Epic Clone

I would recommend to try one of those apps or install a free one instead of waiting for Atlassian.

+1's should be done at the top right of the ticket where you can "Vote" for the issue.

That said, Atlassian, last update was Sept 2018 and you'll "typically review this request in about 12 months time".  All of the other items you said were prioritized higher than this one are done.

What's the latest update on this ticket?

+1 if you can expose an "Advanced Roadmap" that gives an indication as to where on a real timeline this ask is.

I think it's pretty safe to say there is no chance this will ever be implemented.  Opened in 2013, it is now more than 8 years old.   Still no official response from Atlassian except "no more information at this time" 5 years ago. Too bad.  I guess we should probably go to another provider of issue tracking software.  Bugzilla anyone?

This is pending from 2013. Am wondering why is this not being picked up, despite several users voting for it.. Its a pain to manually clone tons of stories... We have to support several versions.. And needs to clone stories for every version.
Absence of this functionality is causing time wastage and productivity loss

As I commented already before, there are apps on the marketplace doing exactly what you are looking for.

See this as an example: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1222030/epic-clone?hosting=server&tab=overview

Especially with the latest announcement by Atlassian to end support for Server and to focus on Cloud I think there won't be much development efforts to implement such features. Therefore, I would recommend to look for an app which is providing this features. Even if those apps are not free and require some investment, you should consider how much time they will save your users who can clone an Epic together with all issues in Epic at once instead of doing all that manually.

I don't think there are technical blocking points or challenges for Atlassian to implement this. They just have the focus on other things at the moment.

I started watching this issues years ago and it's still very important to us. Is there a fundamental technological challenge?  We either need a template feature or a way to clone epics as our epics x tasks are repeated over and over and I can't get my users to adopt Jira because it's too time consuming for them to manually create all of the issues under each epic.

Cloning the epic and then manually linking each story is too time consuming. This would be a nice feature to have on Jira server instead of cloud only.

Jonas Moehringer - ij-solutions added a comment - I wouldn't wait for Atlassian to implement this as they wrote above in the status that their priorities are somewhere else. Although this comment is from 2018, I don't think that something changed here. As Bridy wrote before, there are apps on the marketplace doing this. Beside Clone Plus you could also use Duplicate Epic (Server, free):  https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220519/duplicate-epic?hosting=server&tab=overview Epic Clone (Server + DC, paid):  https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1222030/epic-clone?hosting=server&tab=overview

The Clone Plus app from Bob Swift recently added this functionality - we've been really happy with it!  https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/44043/clone-plus-for-jira?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

I need this so much. One of my EPIC has 89 Tasks under it, and now its required to be clone for another version.

also for our Elsevier users this would be a benefical addtion, I am very surprised this mostly likely very simple addition is not part of the product

Any update on this feature? It would be extremely beneficial to do this. We just had a customer have to go through a much longer process to clone 28 issues into a new subtask. If cloning allows you to clone the Sub-tasks, why can't we do it with Epics?

Can you please provide an update on where this is on your roadmap and possible target release date?

            Hi team,

we need this feature as well. Should be a basic function from Jira.

This ticket was 7 years ago created, a lot of votes and no results.

            This is a pity

            Kind regards

I'm very surprised that this topic was not prioritized higher. It would definitely help in multiple projects. I hope we will get more votes on that soon.

Need this feature, as its going to be very helpful for creating similar kind of Tasks, which have sub-tasks under it.

We are using the https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220519/epic-clone (free plugin), and it´s working great for our need.
