    • We collect Jira Service Desk feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Jira Service Management Data Center. Using Jira Service Management Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

      Problem statement:

Not visible feedback for Required input field.

      Steps to Reproduce:

      1. Open ServiceDesk
      2. Select Settings Tab
      3. Under Get IT help select Edit Fields
      4. Add any new field with Required - Yes
      5. Go to Customer Portal on the ServiceDesk homepage and select Get IT help

      Current/Actual behaviour:

A required fields does not include a visual indicator to show that the field is in fact required (such as an asterisk). It is instead differentiated from non-required fields by the inclusion of the word '(optional)' after the displayed field name:

      Example field name (optional)

      Expected/Suggested Behaviour:

All required fields are expected to be required AND labeled with red asterisk next to the corresponding field.
Required field displays red asterisks or other interface indicator for better user experience.

[JSDSERVER-1302] ServiceDesk Customer Portal field: Required field displays red asterisks

Banged my head on the wall for an hour trying to figure out why the red asterisk wasn't showing up for required fields on the portal form. Hard to believe something as basic as this that was first raised almost 10 years ago still hasn't been corrected. Have had several users complain that they had no idea the field was required when submitting a request. Having to resort to putting "(required)" at the end of each of my field's display name. Come on Atlassian! Low hanging fruit!

Atlassian appears to have been doing a lot of work on complying with various accessibility standards in recent releases.

When will there be some work done on complying with UX/usability features of forms that have been around for a long time, like having a red asterisk for a required field?

The current way portal forms look, with the word "optional" being used makes all our forms look like they're on a website from 1995.

I hope to see Atlassian working on portal UX and UI in the near future.

Just what I thought, being red green colorblind. But then I realized that in this case the asterisks should be sufficient communication even if the color is removed. I also never realized that the asterisks in Jira Core are red

Having begun my journey with Atlassian products while working with U.S. Government agencies as an enterprise architect, i find the proposed solution of RED lettering fraught with hazard regarding compliance [with application accessibility guidelines|https://www.usability.gov/get-involved/blog/2010/02/color-blindness.html]. Yes, distinctive visual and machine-readable markings – not everyone reads with their eyes -- for mandatory fields are highly desirable, but red color is not the best solution.

Is there any update on this request, I've received feedback from numerous end users for this.  It is standard design practice to have required fields have a visual indicator of some sort prior to submitting a form.

Not to mention Jira itself has the red asterisks, so why not service desk?

I understand the design elements to only place the optional keyword for non-mandatory fields, but there should be a visual way to show mandatory fields in request forms. At first glance, the end user may not know what is required, except if they see a red asterisk * , similar to other web forms. It's a core and fundamental user design interface.

Is there anyway to have a visual indicator of required fields for service desk forms?
