Attach screenshot when creating issue

This issue is archived. You can view it, but you can't modify it. Learn more

In JIRA 3, you can add an attachment on the 'create issue' screen, but not add a screenshot. This is a bit inconsistent and non-optimal, because often one raises an issue armed with a screenshot, and the only later add other attachments. We should have the option to display the screenshot applet directly on the create issue page.

[JRASERVER-5015] Attach screenshot when creating issue

Thanks for that Warren. Looks like I was looking in the wrong section to find release notes - thanks for the info on OnDemand vs. Server.
The "See it twice" was in reference to the fact I could not find the menu, so ended up pasting the required screenshot into a comment - which had the affect that it showed in the comment, as well as the attachment area, which seemed like overkill. I've since been pasting new screenshots back into the main description as that only shows them in the attachment area.
Only functionality we've lost now is the ability to title/name the screenshots (it's possible I just can't see/find it). I used to use this functionality regularly to define the screenshots (i.e. pre-change, post-change).

            Hi herring7383,
Our Cloud (OnDemand) releases are always ahead of our Server releases. JIRA Cloud is now at 7.0.0-OD-02, which includes this functionality. You can read more on the recent releases here https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/Cloud/23+August+2015+to+29+August+2015
We've actually removed the Attach Screenshot menu item as you can now drag and drop to the whole issue area, or use your common paste command. Attach File should still be present.
When you say you're pasting it directly into items now and can see it twice, do you mean when you select paste, JIRA is pasting your clipboard contents twice to the issue? If that's what happening, that does sound like a bug to me, and I'd recommend raising a support request regarding that and we can raise the bug to get it looked into and corrected.
            Thanks,
            Warren

            Hey Guys,
Despite 7.0.0 still saying it's unreleased - my on demand site has been updated to it.
The Attach Screenshot option under "More" has gone missing. Related? Intentional?
I'm just pasting it directly into the items for now, but now I can see it twice on one ticket, which seems like overkill.

I won't bother logging a ticket or anything - but figured if any of the 161 watchers on the issue thought this wasn't meant to happen - it'll end up somewhere.

            Cheers.

Not at all, thanks Warren. I've now raised a ticket. For info, it seems to only be when launching the Create issue screen from an Agile board, so maybe it has something to do with Jira Agile.

            Hi richard.rattlidge,
If you're in OnDemand, you should be able to paste the image directly onto the Create issue screen or Edit screen. I just attempted it with my OnDemand instance and Chrome 44 and it worked for me. I'd ask you to raise a support request so our Support team can help you resolve this. I'd do it for you but unfortunately they'll need your SEN for the request.
Sorry I couldn't be more help!

I'm now unable to do this (paste an image into Create issue screen, or indeed the Edit screen), having previously been able to, has a recent release affected this functionality?

There are a lot of features, which are way much better, but the basic functionality just should be there: any issue must be accompanied by screenshots. Attaching files is a terrible headache.

REALLY do need Atlassian to take a view on this and change their thinking - we are struggling with the use of reporting issues via the portal where customers are forced to save screenshots and attach them to tickets rather than just copy and pasting ... other than the extra 20 seconds effort per issue, we are also finding people are not deleting the saved images and we are noticing a build up of saved files on our servers that then need to be farmed and deleted - more work for our service desk.

Can Atlassian PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE switch from the attachment only headset, and realise that with a portal offering, you NEED to give us the screenshot pasting capability for it to be an effective tool. Customers are used to giving screenshots of what they are seeing - trying to change this many people's way of thinking is seen as moving back a step, not forward - and is a serious letdown when I am able to sing JIRA praises on so many other areas.

This is a big issue for us as well. We just want to be able to paste a screenshot into the description (or any other multi line text field with the wiki renderer) during a transition or create or edit screen. Having to do it on the view screen or manually save and then attach is totally counter intuitive.

@Stefan Hett - Nope, not solved. You can attach files when creating issues but you can't paste a screenshot into the description using the clipboard like you can on the Edit Issue page. Currently, if you capture a screenshot (into the clipboard) you need to go through the hassle of opening an image editor to save the screenshot into a file, then browsing for the file when adding it into the JIRA attachements control. It's faster to simply save the issue and then edit it again to paste the screenshot. But that still takes an extra 20 seconds per issue that I'd rather not be wasting.

In JIRA 6.4 the feature to attach files (including screenshots) in the create dialog was added, if I'm not misreading the release notes. So I guess this kinda solves this request?

Adding myself and upvoting. If there's an underlying technical reason that the "Attach Screenshot" (especially the version put into Jira since 6.2.5) functionality can't be put into the Create Issue screen, please tell us so Atlassian. Otherwise, this is an easy change that would eliminate alot of post-issue clicking.

@Dennis, @Conrad, @Thomas in case you didn't see it, there is the ScreenSnipe plugin that is really great in embedding ScreenSnipe into JIRA and also integrates into the Create Issue screen. And even if you do not want to buy ScreenSnipe, you can still use it as standalone screenshot tool that allows you to drag&drop a taken screenshot onto the standard create issue dialog without prior explicit saving as file.

Ditto. I like that you can drag a saved image onto the "choose file" button and it accepts the path for upload, but having an "add screenshot" button will help cut out the step of either saving the screen shot first then create the issue, or saving the issue first and then attaching screenshot.

Bonfire might do the trick but I would have to buy Bonfire. What's the point of buying Jira if I have to buy all the features that should already be included? When Attach Screenshot was added it should have been added to Create Issue as well. If anything I could understand if it had been part of Create Issue but not Edit Issue, at least it would have been added to the most useful place then.

            Hello,

One potential workaround to this issue is to use Bonfire, an add-on for JIRA. Bonfire will allow you to paste a screenshot, and annotate that screenshot, all in one step as you create the issue.

At the moment we have users asking us why we need to do this in a roundabout way by creating an issue, and THEN click on "More Actions" --> "Attach Screenshot".

Regarding implementation, it is possible to add files while creating an issue, so the applet should just add the screenshot the same way than a file which is uploaded.
Attachments also don't need a temporary issue key, they are uploaded temporary and that's it.

Not sure if people interested in this feature are aware that there is a plugin - ScreenSnipe for JIRA which offers exactly this functionality (and much more - full screenshot annotations, zooming, obfuscations, shadows, cropping, etc.).

            Yes it is.
As far as I understand how the screenshot applet works, it uploads the attachment with a POST request (or SOAP interface ?) and to do so it requires to know the JIRA issue key as parameter of the method... but this issue key does not exist until the "create" button is pressed.

Here is a way to implement it:

            • create a temporary space in JIRA to receive screenshots
            • when the "new issue screen" is opened a temporary issue key is generated in that temporary space
            • the screenshot applet will be able to upload screenshots thanks to the temporary issue key
            • when "create" is submitted, JIRA can first create the issue and then attached screenshots from the temporary space
            • when "cancel" is submitted, JIRA can delete the uploaded screenshots from the temporary issue key
            • a trigger should clean up screenshots / issue keys from the temporary space if creation is not submitted after a configurable timeout

Open since 2004... is it so complicated?

I'm curious that there's been no commenting on this for a few months, although it's not been resolved.

This would be a great feature to have.

We're still "recruiting" our management and business to the Jira cause. This seems to be one of those features that they expect to exist once they've grasped the basic use of Jira. It sucks having to apologize for a tool we're trying to roll out enterprise-wide.
