NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

JRA-29743 will introduce SVG support only for system icons, avatars and logos. This suggestion is about allowing users to upload custom SVG avatars (ie. project/user/issue type avatars).

      Workaround

For a workaround on using an SVG image for Issue Type, check How to use an SVG image as an avatar for an Issue Type in Jira

            This would be great!
I have made a bunch of custom icons and are all super blurry with the 16x16 resolution as a PNG.

+1, small but highly useful feature; if natively Jira uses SVGs, let us simply update SVGs.

+1 for support for custom SVG avatars

The number of those default avatars for issue types is not enough, only 19, instead we have tens of issue types already created. It would be great if Jira can handle SVG files properly.

Seems like this feature does not exist in cloud either. What a shame, especially that default avatars are actually Svg's...

I've been dealing this with Jira 8.16. None of the workarounds mentioned here worked flawlessly to me.

Workaround #1How to use an SVG image as an avatar for an Issue Type in Jira
Works well in Jira UI but issue type avatars are missing in all e-mail notifications :-/

Workaround #2 – pguilherme's solution from comment above
I was able to add a new SVG issue type avatar but it always displayed the default issue type avatar (gray circle), I don't know why.

Workaround #3 – High resolution PNG avatars
As none of the SVG workarounds above worked for me on my Jira instance, I was able to force Jira to use PNG files in higher resolutions. Jira stores their avatar files under <jirahome>/data/avatars, each avatar in 13 size variants (from 16x16 to 384x384). If you overwrite the default 16x16 (xsmall) file with higher resolution, Jira will start using it. Don't be afraid about higher resolution, browsers will adjust the avatar size to 16x16 (or larger on high-DPI screens). In my case, I was happy with 128x128 (xxxlarge) format that was still small size.

Once you find your avatar ID, you can copy a larger PNG over the default one:

            cp -v 12345_{xxxlarge,xsmall}_*

Refresh the page, best with full reload using Ctrl+F5.
