Private Dashboard and Filters Not Viewable by Global Admins

One of our JIRA users, who is not a global admin, created a new Dashboard and about 4 new filters. He did not choose to share the Dashboard or filters so I assume they are private. He wanted to share his dashboard and doesn't have that permission when he "edits" the dashboard. Therefore, as a global admin, I logged in and was going to share the Dashboard for him. However, when I search for the Dashboard it's not found. When I search for the filters he created they are also not found. As a global admin, why should those be hidden from me?

I also had another of our global admins test this and he is having the same experience I am. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Pls consider adding Jira Global Admin visibility for Private dashboards. Since Global admins can anyways have workarounds to access any private data, its unnecessary to complicate it.

Plus one. Admins need to have this ability. We have a user that set up a private filter with a subscription emailing the team and no way to fix it until we find out who created the subscription.

I am running into the same issue. I have a user that has setup private filters and as a site-admin I cannot see them. Please reconsider allowing admins to see private filters and boards.

I don't have any fault with the desire for private boards/filters at all. I think what the original reporter and I both have in mind is that the JIRA administrators should be able to see private filters to diagnose unexpected observations without having to look at the database.

            Thank you for the reply.

            Hi dmarshal,

Unfortunately, we can't prevent board administrators from changing a board's filter to a private filter. Given, that there's a use case for private boards as well to satisfy (these need to be backed by a private filter).

There's definitely space for improvement in the UI, such that the consequences of selecting a private filter are made more clear to the board administrator and in turn, prevent the scenario you are running into.

We currently plan to look at this and other usability problems around board filters in the mid-term future.

Thanks for your feedback on this.

I hope this issue will be reconsidered and reopened. Here's my use case (with JIRA Server 6.3.15 and JIRA Agile 6.6.80):

            • a board's admin changed the board's filter but doesn't share the new filter
            • from the perspective of other users, the board doesn't exist anymore
            • as an admin, I can't determine whether the board has actually been deleted or just has a private filter
            • I had to go look at the database to see what was going on
            • I had to impersonate the user to get the URL needed to change the sharing
            • Lastly, I had to communicate the URL to that user to have them change the sharing

Having to administer a JIRA instance by looking at the database and impersonating users is rather unpalatable.

            Hi knighswander,

It is currently not possible for an admin to alter private filters / dashboards. The filters/dashboards have to be shared with at least a user/group for an admin to be able to make changes to them.

            Hope this clarifies the behaviour.
