To delete a label to be completely removed from a project in JIRA, the label must be removed from all the issues in that project. Once it is removed from all issues, it will no longer be suggested in autocomplete or when browsing a project's labels.

This functionality could be improved by having a way to simply delete the label when accessing a project, instead of going to each issue (or performing bulk operations).

We recently had a label change for our process and noticed that there were two labels that had similar names. For the deletion of the other label, it looks like a pretty cumbersome todo. Is there any way there could be a possibility to change or modify labels in bulk? I.e., change label a to label b?

If any cloud users have arrived at this issue from the link on this page, we wanted to let you know that we've just released a new addon which adds label management to Jira Cloud.

It's totally free for organisations with less than 10 users, and we've tried to price it very economically for organisations with more users.

I join the suggestion. It would be very useful to have a tag management.

Unfortunately I end up using components as if they were tags.

We'll typically review this request in about 12 months time, at which point we’ll consider whether we need to alter its status.

Hahah .. I like that kind of humor .... Atlassians statement is from September 2018.

After 2 and a half year - @Atlassian - just in case you can't count correctly that are 28 months later!! - there ist STILL no option to manage and set labels for admins.

Sadly you're not (and everybody knows why) part of the JD Power customer satisfaction survey.

You deserve nothing like a "worst customer satisfaction in the industry"-Award.

The labels should be managed. i.e. users should not have ability to create random labels.
            There should be information available:

            • Labels Vs no of Issues

This also calls for ability to delete any labels that does not have any issues.

The casing of the labels is a setup for failure as well. "Label" and "label" are two different labels making the managing of labels even more difficult.

We're looking at using custom label fields to replace multi-select boxes, when the lists are very, very long. The label selector and visualizer is much better for very large lists. But managing the label values becomes critical.

It affects also the JIRA software 7.3.6, 7.5.0 versions, can you update the ticket?

it's a bit risky to touch the Database table to remove the old labels.

Hey @John Long ...yeah i find myself using the Batch often to clean up a bunch of labels at once.

1$ jar for any 'naughty' labels added by developers will curb the problem; a 20$ jar will stop the problem dead in its tracks!

Well that was easy. I searched by label and found the culprit ticket. Someone typed an entire description into the labels field which included the word "was" -the three letter combo I was using. Removing it did that trick. "was" no longer shows up in auto complete. Thanks!

In my case it is possible that someone misspelled it the same way as I did. I just typed the first three letters, saw it appear in the popup and hit return to accept it. I forgot that JIRA does not allow you to hit return to accept, so I got a new three letter label. I removed it, but it is still showing up in auto complete. I guess this means someone else did the same thing, but left the label on their issue. I am not sure how to track down issues by label. But that seems to be what I will have to do.

The problem is the way it is deleted is be removing it from all Jiras. We have a hundred devs using whatever labels they want, so there are.. ~100s of bugs with wrong labels, typos, or wrong case. It's not feasible to remove every bug with that label. I guess maybe a batch process can remove them?

When you remove the last instance of the label it should disappear forever; if not the indexing will do the trick.

For the Issue you have the misspelled label; have you removed it/deleted it from the JIRA Issue?

@Brett Connor, sounds working, but I tried both options and did re-index twice. Those unused labels are still there, in the edit dropdown list. Not sure what's wrong on our cloud service. It bases on mxxxxx.atlassian.net.

After removing the label you no longer want, then go to system administration -> System -> Indexing, you'll see the option to re-index. I have found that unused labels aren't presented to users in the labels edit box after this.
Of course this relies on you having admin access.

I am now encountering users with this issue in my system. Before I became the admin, a decision was made to have "customers" be a label field and not a multi-select list, the decision was made since it would be a jira admin function to do update the lists instead of being able to be delegated delegated to the project admin level and they didn't want to be called for every customer add, which is another issue.

Unfortunately it leads to invalid choices being available for a project and or spelling issues and our users would like to be able to either delete items from the list or the entire list and not pull from the system. At least only suggest from my own usage of that field or from those used within that project.
