      Problem

To delete a label to be completely removed from a project in JIRA, the label must be removed from all the issues in that project. Once it is removed from all issues, it will no longer be suggested in autocomplete or when browsing a project's labels.

This functionality could be improved by having a way to simply delete the label when accessing a project, instead of going to each issue (or performing bulk operations).

      Workaround

Operate the Bulk change all N issues to the JQL-queried issues:

      labels in (foo, bar)

      1. Edit issues
      2. Select Change Labels > Find and remove these

Very true, 27f8e5cfa889  In the decade I have been using the system, none of the changes they have made were clear improvements to usability for any of my use cases. All I have ever felt is frustration from functionalities being relocated, rather than being substantially improved. Extremely disappointing.

01fb2d216a02 it's been 12 years since this request was originally created. It's obvious Atlassian doesn't pay much attention to these requests.

Would be great to be able to know who created a lable; have a report where it is used and also to ahve the option to clean up labels. Really hope this is implemented.

A few months ago we replaced our outdated labels with new ones, using bulk operations to add/remove labels from the relevant tickets - this worked great as these old labels disappeared as soon as they weren't assigned to any tickets.

After the recent update we've seen all of these return, even though they're not assigned to any tickets.

We can't see a method to delete them outright, and now they're showing up in our field drop-downs alongside their replacements. Is there any word on this feature for fully deleting them, or a current workaround?

            Hi 810945c120a3

You are partially right about Advanced Label Manager for Jira that behind the scene, it uses bulk editing to delete, edit and merge labels.

That is because there isn't an API endpoint to administer labels. However, we believe it still gets the job done and can save tons of time. If you completely delete a label, it will be gone (there might be some caching for a while, but they will be gone eventually).

Along with managing default labels (rename, merge, bulk delete etc.), it also enables users to:

            • Manage custom label fields (optionally use color-coded custom label field)
            • Build label reports in Jira dashboard

Feel free to reach out to us if you faced any issue or got feedback.

As Labels are so widely used, I believe this deleting labels feature is essential for Jira admins. Especially when you have a big user tier in your Jira instance, it's easy to end up with so many similar labels with some typos inside. If labels can't be properly managed, it will be useless. As a Jira admin, I think this is a must-have feature. Atlassian, wake up and listen to your customers! Do something really impactful!

810945c120a3 so if there is the way to delete labels via API could you please share that curl request or link to documentation?

Advanced Label Manager & Colorful Custom Labels for Jira to the rescue! 🎉🎉🎉

One of the only apps that lets you do the literal bare minimum Atlassian is too lazy to implement...

You can Edit and Delete your labels with this tool.

Edit: This tool provides a nice UI for pretending to manage your labels, but Editing and Deleting is just automating what we can do by ourselves. Editing is essentially making a new label and replacing it in all issues. Delete removes the label from all issues and only hides it from the Label Manager list.
