Excel Export Is Broken With Office 2010 or 2013 / LibreOffice / Numbers

NOTE: This bug report is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

We have reports from customers that Excel 2010/2013 does not accept the exported file from JIRA anymore. This needs to be verified and corrected.

Excel export cannot be opened on LibreOffice either. And, apparently, on Google Docs as well. Apple's Numbers is also reported to be affected.

            Hi,

we are using Jira Project Management Software (v7.3.6#73017-sha1:51437cf), and we still have this issue.

            No export to HTML.

Exporting to CSV or XLS still has the date mixup...

            Hi scmsupp,

CSV export is available in JIRA Software 7.2.0. See all features in the release notes.

            Cheers,

We use JIRA 7.0.10 but there´s no Export to Excel (HTML) just an Export to Excel option. Also there is neither Export to CSV or Export to HTML options either. In what version of JIRA are these available?

I don't think this helps those of us still using JIRA 6.4.x. Will we be getting this support?

            Hello,

Just to add some more context:

            • The export to Excel (HTML) functionality has always been exporting an html file having .xls extension.
            • Now that this functionality has been renamed to Export to HTML, in order to have it working as before, you just have to rename the exported file and change the file extension from .html to .xls.

            I hope this helps

            Cheers,
            Dario

            Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who has given the time to watch, vote and comment on this issue. We have recently changed how JIRA exports data from the issue navigation screen.

JIRA no longer supports exporting an Excel file, which renders this bug obsolete. Instead, we now export the HTML report (an identical export, without a .xls suffix) which when opened by Excel, should provide an equivalent result. We recommend migrating to the CSV export for any long term usage of this feature.

I understand this is an extra step for many of you and could be seen as an inconvenience. However, we believe this is a more consistent solution than maintaining interoperability between multiple Excel-like products.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Mirroring current concerns, the export is bad. The output is a .csv without any formatting. In addition the selected columns of the export do not match in the export. The logo, exported timestamp etc are all lost. The export was one of key drivers to choose JIRA..

            Hello

I did an export as HTML, copy and pasted to an excel file. The formatting and hyperlinks appeared. It's an extra step but better than CSV.

The export function was always HTML format leaving it up to the excel application to convert the tables (in HTML) to rows/columns.

And to your question in comment, the short answer is no!

Looks like Atlassian have decided to change the Excel export to a HTML report rather than fixing the Excel export.

After removing the patch from Windows 7 Pro "Security Update for Microsoft Excel 2010 (KB3115322) 32-Bit Edition" I can now open the exported ".xls" files from JIRA. These files are really html file that use the MS code in execl to translate in to the BIFF xls file format.

I have not dug in to the patch to find out why MS has stopped this feature.

Keith, if you look at JRA-38174 you will see that this problem started showing up after applying a Microsoft patch. We are seeing the same thing on Office 2010 now, where it was working great for us.

We will be looking to back out the last few patches to see if we can get this to work again. But it looks like something Microsoft has done, not JIRA.

The problem is getting bigger and bigger as more people upgrade from Office 2007 and alternatives (Numbers, Google Docs, LibreOffice or OpenOffice) are getting more popular.

Thought I'd share this workaround to get results into Numbers in OSX. Might work for other setups too.

            1. Export to excel
            2. Rename downloaded file from .xls to .html
            3. Open file in Safari (it renders a perfectly decent html table)
            4. Select all text in the main table
            5. Paste into empty Numbers table
            6. Boom.

As an improved replacement for the built-in Excel export feature, Better Excel Plugin exports real XLSX format files.

Besides Microsoft Excel, the exported files are compatible with Google Spreadsheets, Open Office (incl. LibreOffice) and Numbers.

Also, there are major advantages of using the native file format for spreadsheets vs. using an HTML table having .xls file extension. See the comparison here.

I don't understand why the developers made this crappy export in the first place. A CSV-export is more useful and easier to develop as well. I really don't understand why this issue takes this long.

The actual problem (the export is HTML, not XLS of CSV: JRA-27567) is more than 3 years old.

I have MS Office Excel 2010 v 14.0 and JIRA v. 6.2.1. Opening and saving an HTML file with an .xls extension works OK with older versions of Excel (the file is converted automatically in Excel 2003), but is cumbersome with 2010 and higher. Sample file is attached: ORC 1.1.1 (VEIC JIRA).xls. Here is my experience:

            • Open Excel 2010
            • Run a JIRA search, then click 'Export' > 'Excel (Current fields)'
            • The file will be saved with an .xls extension
            • Double-click on the file. Excel icon is now blinking on the Taskbar
            • Switch to Excel to view message: "The file you are trying to open, filename, is in a different format than that specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?"
            • Click 'Yes' and the file opens
            • Click 'Save'
            • Message appears: "filename may contain features that are not compatible with Web Page. Do you want to keep the workbook in this format?..."
            • Click 'No'
            • Change "Save as type" from Web Page (.htm, .html) to Excel Workbook (.xlsx)
            • Type a filename and click 'Save'

(Note: I open Excel 2010 first because I also have Excel 2003 on my machine and the file will open in 2003 by default if Excel is not running.)

I have the same problem described by Haddon above. Running JIRA version 6.2.3 and Office 2010.

I don't actually care about Excel/Numbers/LibreOffice support: my requirement is to be able to get a list of issues out of Jira in a portable structured format that I can use elsewhere (e.g. to send just a list of titles in an email, paste into a slide, etc.).

Rather than chasing proprietary file formats, my recommendation is to remove "Excel Export" and replace it with an ultra-simple "CSV Export".

            Hi martinez.de.la.symbioz,

This is an issue we would still like to fix. However, at the moment it is not in our short-term backlog as we are currently working through higher priority issues in other areas of JIRA.

Please do watch this issue as I will update its status as soon as new information is available.

            Regards,

            Oswaldo Hernández.

I have this problem a lot also; it's embarrassing when I show this to clients. I'll send a sample excel file if you want, if you give me an address to send it to (not public).

I'm running Windows 7 SP1 and Office 2013, and every time I try to open the results of an "export filter results to excel", I get the error "The file format and extension of 'JIRA.xls' don't match. The file could be corrupted or unsafe. Unless you trust its source, don't open it. Do you want to open it anyway?". It renders fine when you click "next".

All of the Windows users here have been upgraded to 2013, but the Mac users are still on the previous version and do not get the error.

In our case, the problem is that what JIRA exports as an .xls file is actually HTML and not an expected Excel format.

ohernandez@atlassian.com, it is the same Excel file that can be exported from any JIRA instance.
