Ability to control the number of comments to collapse at site level

    • 11
    • 23
    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Current behaviour

On loading an issue with 107 comments, the first 5 appear:

Underneath the 5 comments is a button, View 100 older comments. After clicking the next 100 comments appear along with a new button View 2 remaining older comments:

      Desired behaviour

Sometimes the agents and admins don't want to have to click to view more comments and want to have all comments being shown in the issue view.

      Suggested resolution

Enable the jira.comment.collapsing.minimum.hidden setting to the new issue view.

      Workaround

      There is no workaround.

      Notes

The related feature request JRACLOUD-44911 – User-option to disable auto collapse on comments asks that this feature be enabled at user level (rather than at site level).

[JRACLOUD-74680] Ability to control the number of comments to collapse at site level

            Pinned comments

            From https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-84340:

            NOTE FROM PRODUCT TEAM
This is a feature [*jira.comment.collapsing.minimum.hidden*] that only ever worked with the old issue view which has since been deprecated. Changing these settings does not impact how comments appear in the new issue view. This is not a bug, it is expected behaviour. As a result we are closing this as 'Obsolete'.

When are you doofuses going to fix this? It used to be possible to prevent comments from collapsing, but somewhere along the way, this feature was broken. Now we have to submit multiple ignored requests to reinstate it. Why am I not surprised?

            It's happening again:

Setting 0 not working either in jira.comment.collapsing.minimum.hidden

I believe in my instance comments do not collapse when "All" activity is selected, but do collapse when just "Comments" are selected.

I've set `jira.comment.collapsing.minimum.hidden` to 0 in our system, and it does not seem to open up all comments; it's still hiding some. (based on what criteria, I've no idea)

Despite the description of the setting saying

"0 means there will be no comment collapsing."

Besides a general system setting, I miss a possibility to collapse single comments that are not of interest at the moment, so I can move more quickly to relevant ones and I am less distracted. I imagine another icon (e.g. triangle) next to the line containing <avatar><name><time><permalink> on top of a comment.

            @Roger Knapp:
new comments being collapsed instead of old ones is JRACLOUD-76318.

Lately I've noticed that old comments are expanded by default and new comments are collapsed.  I do not like the comment collapsing.  And collapsing the new instead of old is even worse.  Please do provide a way for users to adjust this.  The old view is no longer available, so work around is not possible any longer.

Thank you for your feedback on the jira.comment.collapsing.minimum.hidden setting in the new issue view. We have a range of improvements we are working on and so for now, we won’t be focusing on this ticket.

We are however looking at ways to improve the end user experience for comments by enabling comments to be sorted and saving this at the user preference level. You can follow this work here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-73076. I have assigned this ticket to myself and will leave it open for now so we can re-assess after we transition everyone to the new view.
