Summary

Due to recent update in adding file attachments with JIRA v7.0.0-OD-02-247 it is no longer possible to rename a attachment while pasting attachments to an issue using the Command + V option (MAC) or the CTRL + V option (windows) as the attach screenshot option has been removed and has been merged to the Attach File option. And the ability to rename JIRA attachments is not currently available as described in:

      Steps to Reproduce

      As described in

      1. Copy Screenshot to clipboard
      2. Paste screenshot to issue

      Expected Results

Ability to rename screenshot on paste or after attached

      Actual Results

Image is attached to issue with default filename created by clipboard

      Notes

Previous functionality was MORE >> Attach Screenshot >> Paste Image

      • Could rename image at this point

      Workaround:

      • Save screenshot to local file system
      • Rename file
      • Attach to Issue as file rather than clipboard option.

            [JRACLOUD-66045] Rename File Attachments

It's been nine years, but, let's never give up.

This issue bugs me almost every day. If I add screenshots, I want to be able to rename them from within the ticket in Jira.

I currently explicitly refer to my attachments to explain them to my teammates, which is frustrating: "IMG_9043.png shows the current situation, and Screenshot 2024-07-09 113758.png shows my new design."

Please fix this! As Laura mentioned, the workaround is ridiculous and not really a workaround at all. It's just a long way of saying it can't be done in Jira.

This is basic functionality! Please implement.

I can't believe this ticket was closed as fixed. Sure, there's a workaround but it's so laborious and it really slows me and my team down. When managing hundreds of tickets, these extra steps add up and are considered 'waste" from a "Lean" perspective. I respectfully request that this ticket be reopened or another one made to bring back the feature that was removed.

            OLD (FASTER WAY):

            1. Hit [print-screen] button
            2. Ctrl-V into Jira
            3. Name file something intuitive like "main nav rollover". Click save. Voila!

            WORKAROUND (SINCE FEATURE WAS AXED):

            1. Hit [print-screen] button
            2. Browse to find location to save file (multiple clicks)
            3. Name file and click save
            4. Open Windows file explorer and browse to find file
            5. Go back to Jira and drag & drop file into ticket

If there's another more recent version of this ticket, pls let me know.

            Thanks a lot

A Jira ticket can have many screenshots.  The ability to name the screenshot during control-V is critical.  Why did Jira remove functionality in the "New View"???

And responses from our resources concurs with the recent comments. After I advised our Agile team resources I received this response from one of them "I would struggle if I didn’t know how to get to this." So the having the option on the menu will minimize confusion, keep support tickets to a minimum and not really take up too much on the menu. Something to consider from your users.

I agree with Melanie. This is very unintuitive. Now I have to try to explain to 1000+ users that the functionality is still there, they just can see it. Why not just leave the Menu item too?

Why remove the item from the menu? Without it being on the menu, there is no indication on the web page that you can add attachments by drag and dropping or copy/pasting.

Lingbo, thanks for the clarification. It's important that we still have the capability to rename our screenshots after we paste them into the issue. I am good with this one now.

            Hi everyone,

We shipped some improvements in how attachments can be added this week and here's the new pieces we added:

            • Drag and drop functionality: Grab files from anywhere and drop them to an issue.
            • Copy and paste: You can now paste files directly to an issue too.

As part of this, we decided to remove the Attach Screenshot option to simplify the menu. But the functionality remains unchanged, i.e. you can still take screenshots with the same keyboard and then just paste on to the issue. You will get the same dialog where you can rename the screenshot.

Thanks for letting us know your thoughts as always!

            Cheers,
            Lingbo

Something weird is going on... I can still paste and get the screen prompt allowing me to rename, but I had 3 issue open and in 2 of them i could see the Attach Screenshot in the More Menu.... and in one it was not present. then merely the act of hitting <F5> to refresh the page it was gone.

I've experimented and found that on my cloud jira... (7.0.0-OD-05-005) if I have an issue open and click the issue number at the top, effectively navigating to the issue again... the attach screenshot is present in my drop down, but if I hit <F5> then the menu option goes away. Click on the link at the top to itself again and the Attach Screenshot reappears.

I have tried it on this very issue and it is always present. Weird.

In any case pasting into the issue Ctrl-Insert still gives the option to name it in real time.

The add screenshot option from the More menu gives you the option to give the attachment a name in real time. This is an important feature that we got added back in, and we'd like it added back in again, please.

I do see it on this very jira issue itself, but not in my complanies cloud jira . the Menu item is nice, but you don't really need it.

            Hi all,

We have brought back the attach screenshot option to the View Issue page, so that you are again able to rename your screenshots when you paste them from the clipboard.

Atlassian please fix this by at the very least adding back the functionality to change the file name when it is uploaded, or even better take a more holistic approach and reopen JRA-25060 to allow the renaming of attachments/screenshots, often someone will upload an attachment/screenshot and forget to give it a valid name, meaning they'd then need to delete it and re-upload it to rename it, if we could rename existing attachments/screenshots that would be even better.

When can we expect a response from Atlassian on this? This is really impacting our productivity and ability to perform meaningful work in JIRA. Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to put the functionality back in since it was already there before. Thank you!

Agree with all of the comments above. I received a lot of complaints from within my company after this new feature is introduced and the original attach screenshot with ability to rename the files is removed. Attaching screenshots with proper descriptive names to JIRA issues is a standard for us and now it has become very time consuming.

In addition, I would also like the ability to rename any attachments in JIRA like you can do with Confluence. Right now, the only way to rename it is to download the file (if you don't have the original file on your local computer) and reattach it again.

Excellent point by Jacqy about the loss of ability to comment. This 'feature' is a significant step backwards.

This change renders 'attach screenshot' useless. The only reason to use it in the first place is to be able to rename your image on the fly.

As of right now, attach screen shot has no use for me. It's just another feature that I used to rely on that is now gone from the product.

Why was the old method removed? The new way is a "nice to have", but not at the expense of losing existing functionality.

Current way actually increases the number of steps, as previously we could attach a screenshot from the clipboard and rename it at the time of attachment, now the image is given a generic date/time stamp. Which means that if we want to name the file to something specific, then we can’t use the clipboard feature really. We have to save the file, name it, attach it.

It’s cumbersome. I’d like to please bring that feature back, ASAP.

Would definitely like to have the 'attach screenshot' feature back please! Adding multiple screenshots on a ticket will get more difficult and time consuming if we have to name and save the image first, and then upload it as a 'file'.

            Hello,
As you can see in screenshot-1, i must have this auto rename screenshot to explain what is the issue on which screenshot.
Now with the new updated version JIRA v7.0.0-OD-02-247, i must save the screenshot with a desired name on my local computer before i can upload it on Jira. This process takes so much more time for me.

I need to have the old feature back, or maybe a mix of both work if possible.

            Thank you.

Similar to Jacqy George's comments, the old functionality of choosing the Attach Screenshot, pasting, naming and adding a comment all at the same time was more convenient for us than the "short cut" of just pasting an image.

I think for us, just adding a rename function or a "name on paste" capability would be great since comments generally reference multiple screenshots.

In the mean time, we'd like the old functionality back. Is it not possible to have both methods available?

The Workaround by the filesystem is surely possible. But devalorises largely the possibility to pase screenshots directly.
Specialy if several attachments are present and should be referenced within an issue, in relatiaon with a comment or the description, a meanigfull name of a screenshot would be needed.

All in all the new functionality is in many casses less worth than the earlier one, as a workaround over the filesystem is longer then the way was before.

            Looking forward for a fix.

I would like to see the old functionality returned. We need the ability to name the file on the clipboard and can no longer do so. This is must as we can have several screenshots on a single ticket and reference them by file name. Also, the comment option is gone too now so that adds a step back in. This new 'feature' isn't really reducing the number of steps/clicks. Thank you!
