Thanks to the +1,000,000 people that continue using Jira’s Dark theme. We are now confident that we can close the highest voted request in Atlassian’s history.

We are still working on a few bits and bobs, but none of that is preventing the full use of the feature.

In January 2022, a group of people at Atlassian decided to migrate a 20 year old product comprised of thousands of screens and a mature Ecosystem. We didn’t take the task lightly and we are proud of the outcome.

Theming is transforming all Atlassian products: Confluence has already confirmed its release and our Data Center products too!

      How to use themes

There are a few ways to change the theme on your Jira Cloud products. You can still control your theme from your Personal Settings page just like before. But for beta, we’ve added a new and extra fast theme-switching method via the Account icon on the top navigation bar.

If you’d like to chose a theme via the Account icon on the top navigation bar:

      1. Select your Account icon in the top navigation bar.
      2. Select Theme.
      3. Select the theme you’d like to use.

If you’d like to chose a theme via your Personal settings page:

      1. Go to Settings > Personal Jira settings.
      2. Scroll down the page to Theme.
      3. Select the theme you’d like to use.

Selecting Match system will sync the theme to your device. If you’re using a device that has a dark or light theme, Jira will match that.

If you’re an admin with more than 10 users on your site and you don’t want this feature available in your instance, please contact our support team.

      What to expect

The majority of our products are looking pretty sweet in the new themes, but there are a few bits and bobs that are definitely a work in progress. It won’t affect all our users, but depending on your setup, those areas might look a little odd during the beta period.

If you find parts of Jira that don’t look quite right with the new themes, please give us feedback through the feedback link on your Personal settings page.

I submitted this using the feedback button as well, but just for the ticket: if you have a "highlight" colour configured in your instance (for e.g. company branding), it automatically sets the "background" (navigation bar colour) to white, breaking dark mode. There's no way to clear that value or set it to any kind of transparent, meaning that you end up having the same colour of header for both light and dark themes, which essentially means one of them always looks awful/broken.

Edit: if you clear/revert your "highlight" colour, you can fix the header in dark mode, but obviously that breaks the company branding. Presumably the best solution is to allow admins to set colour choices for both light and dark mode separately.

Could not agree more with Ben,

I switch a lot between a dark themed Visual Studio and Confluence, and it is really straining on the eyes to go from dark backgrounds to eye-piercing white.

            Hi everyone,

As you can see from ckhatchikian's update above, light and dark themes in Jira are now officially in beta! 🎉 You’ll see some Marketplace apps themed today, with more to come as partners are busy adding theming support and releasing updated versions of their apps.

I want to shout-out a few of our early adopter partners who collaborated with us during the pilot and early access programs to test and share feedback, and worked hard to have themed apps now ready for customers! 🙌

JXL for Jira by Fine Software — thank you for all of your valuable feedback as a pilot program partner, helping us improve the system for partners, and building a great showcase of what can be achieved by embracing this feature in code. In Fine Software’s words:

We adopted the new design tokens and implemented themes in JXL for Jira together with a big enhancement of the conditional formatting feature in our issue tables. It now has a 90-shades colour spectrum that instantly adjusts to the theme. As always, we poured a lot of design love and attention to detail into it and it turned out just perfect. Check it out yourself.

Appfire — with multiple apps on the Marketplace, Appfire made time to showcase their progress with our team and share feedback on early iterations of the tooling for developers. As Appfire writes:

Appfire maintains its own design system, so part of the process of implementing this feature across our product ecosystem meant ensuring that global dark mode in Atlassian works seamlessly with Appfire’s own implementation of dark mode. We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve rolled out dark mode in Issue Matrix for Jira as part of the pilot program (with JSU not far behind), and we’re looking forward to enabling this feature on more apps, so our customers can fully customize their Atlassian sites.

Tempo — rallying a team to migrate key experiences for many Jira users, in one of the most requested Marketplace apps. Straight from Tempo:

Exciting news for those using Timesheets by Tempo within Jira! Tempo now supports dark mode when planning or logging time in the issue view. This new enhancement provides a more seamless experience for Tempo and Jira users — in addition to helping reduce eye strain and providing more comfort when working in low-light conditions.

Are you a Marketplace partner reading this? Join us on the dark side! Check out our quick-start instructions on one page, and all the details in our developer community announcement — this is where you can come ask us questions too.

            Hi everyone,

As you may have seen in the recent update on the "Help us test Jira’s new dark theme" community post, we have now enabled themed Marketplace apps across all customer instances of Jira Cloud, where the app developer has updated their app.

This means you'll start seeing the first of your favourite Marketplace apps appear in the new light/dark themes as well, when you have the new themes turned on in your Jira personal settings. (This works for apps built with Connect today, and apps built with Forge will be enabled soon.)

If you're a Marketplace partner: now is the time to update your apps to support the new themes if you haven't already! Check out our quick-start instructions on one page, or all the details in our developer community announcement — this is where you can come ask us questions too.

Will these be user controlled? If it has to be the same for everyone, it doesn't really meet the accessibility requirement.

The new dark mode is great.

There are 2 topics I'd love to have fixed:

            1. Business projects aren't as nicely distinguishable from each other anymore due to the always same looking background. The accent you set in the top bar is noticeable but not strong enough as a feedback in which project I currently am. I'd love if this color option could be highlighted more clear
            2. The screen flickers in the screen, where I move issues f.e. from one project to another. This is annoying and potentially also dangerous for people with epilepsy

            Greetings

            @Eliot,
Tempo is the app, so it's not the Atlassian bug. Marketplace Vendors are working on adding support for dark mode in their apps, so you have to wait. You can also ping Tempo on their customer portal if it's a critical issue. It helps you to track what it's the progress of implementing this support.

This is great, but like a few others have said, it works inconsistently.

For example, as soon as I open TEMPO it's all white which is never a good thing.

            Hello Community

Just dropping in because we have some huge news to share… we’re delivering an early access preview of our highest requested feature, a dark theme (and a new light theme as well) to Jira Cloud products.

We’ll be providing early access to themes in Jira labs, which means you get to test it out early and help us make the feature the best it can be. Once you’ve opted in to the experience, you’ll be able to switch between our new light and dark themes. We really need to call out that this is still a work in progress and you can opt out at any time.

How to opt in to the new themes

The feature is available via Jira Labs on your Personal settings page. If you’d like to try it out:

            1. Go to  Settings > Personal Jira settings. **
            1. Scroll down the page to Jira labs.
            1. Opt in to Light and dark themes using the toggle.

At any point, you can return to the original Jira colors by opting out of Light and dark themes, just switch the toggle back off.

The majority of our products are looking pretty sweet in the new themes, but there are a few bits and bobs that are definitely a work in progress, such as Marketplace apps. It won’t affect all our users, but depending on your setup, those areas might look a little odd during the early access period.

If you find parts of Jira that don’t look quite right with the new themes, please give us feedback through the Share your feedback button on your Personal settings page.

More info on what to expect can be found here

For Marketplace Partners, please read how to migrate all of your Apps to Dark Theme here

This is great news. In the meantime, someone might want to go update this thread, which gives the reader a rather poor impression of the progress on this high-value issue: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/Jira-How-to-enable-Dark-theme-in-jira-cloud-Without-needing-to/qaq-p/1101066

I've created a new project and it has dark mode. I'm vision impaired and dark mode is terrible for me. How do I switch that off?

Q2 2023, seriously?! It only took you guys, what, 8 years to start implementing it? Unbelievable. I know, I know - other priority items, right?!

In the meantime, anyone who wants dark mode can use Dark Reader extension for their browsers, it works pretty nicely.

Thank you! Really looking forward to this, and dark mode is much easier on the eyes at the start of my work day when it's still dark outside.

Hi 5ed0de4f9757 ! how are you? The enrolment of Alpha will work for Partners and users.

We've just sent comms to Partners through the community here: https://community.developer.atlassian.com/t/introducing-design-tokens-new-colour-foundations-and-dark-mode/62258

Sounds great. I assume that part of this ticket is also to clean up the whole Design System / AtlasKit / Emotion / Styled Components mess to ensure that all front-end components used by Marketplace Partners are ready for Dark Mode? Thank you so much Vincent ─ I truly can't say thank you enough! The Stylish extension and the style you sent work flawlessly. Now I can work at night without frying my eyes, yay!

I understand things take time but Q2 2023 is a bit ridiculous for a feature that has been requested for years (and that every other major SaaS managed to implement). After using Stylish, Atlassian's implementation of Dark Mode needs to be similar or better than this alternative, especially taking into consideration the amount of time it will take.

            Thanks, thanks, thanks!

I have been using (and endlessly tweaking) https://github.com/zelch/atlassian_dark_grey for the style for jira, confluence, and bitbucket.

It's definitely not as pretty as the one Vincent linked, but so far I'm not aware of anything that comes up with a white background, or which is unreadable.

Proper support would, of course, be far better...  And, well, in both cases, your mileage will vary whenever Atlassian updates the CSS.

Knowing that many many people would love to join the Alpha we are working on streamlining the process to make it extremely easy for people to enrol.

I was probably a bit hasty with my statement. I apologize for that, especially if I offended anyone.
For me, Dark Reader works just fine, but that doesn't have to be the case for everyone.

            Hello Marc.

Unfortunately, Dark Reader works quite poorly on Atlassian products, including Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.

It works in places, but breaks very badly in others.

The public Jira site works significantly better than the Jira Cloud sites for customers.

I have spent the past several months taking the best of the, frankly, not horribly grand style filters for Stylus and adding to them to try to get something that I can look at for any period of time, and which is still usable, and...

I have not published the results yet, because on a very regular basis I find more things that are either entirely unreadable, or which are not made dark.

Including several cases where things that worked in the recent past no longer worked because Atlassian made significant changes to the CSS, despite a complete lack of visual changes when viewed without any filters.

This is frankly unsustainable unless you, for example, are incapable of looking at the bright mode screen for long periods of time due to health problems.

And even then, trying to just keep up with the changes eats up an unreasonable amount of time, for a result which is, frankly, far uglier than anyone would like.

I would say that my biggest disappointments with the recent news are:

            • The timeline, which is somewhat absurd.
            • The fact that, despite the horribly long timeline, and despite how long people have been asking for these features, they are still not implementing this across their Cloud or Server product lineup, they are instead apparently doing only some of their services.  Which leaves things like Bitbucket left out entirely.

The second one is especially painful.

And if my current position had any influence on purchasing decisions related to Atlassian products, I would be strongly pushing for a move to a vendor that cared about accessibility issues.
