Ability to set default value for contents of standard fields

      Default values currently cannot be specified for fields like Description (large free-text field).

      As an administrator, I want to be able to pre-populate the field with template text to instruct users how to fill in the related text.

            I agree. What I do as a workaround is add some JavaScript to the field's description in a Field Configuration. The script prepopulates the contents of the field. Worked well enough in JIRA 4.4. With JIRA 5.x the lightbox for creating an issue means I need to change my script to handle that.

            It would be much better to have a default value for all standard fields.
