Atlassian Status as of 6 September 2013

      Hi everyone,
A big thank you for the feedback you've provided on this feature request.
We've been working on this issue and have good news: from Crowd 2.7 (soon to be released), you'll be able to rename users (i.e. usernames) in Crowd's internal directories.

Crowd will also detect any renames that are made in a remote directory, including LDAP servers.

If you have any further feedback or improvement requests around this topic, please create a separate issue as we will be closing this one.

Thanks again for your continued support,
      Helen Hung

Hi dtkoch, yes it is high on our radar. We have been recently working closely with products, like JIRA, on this functionality. We are looking to implement this support in Crowd however we dont have a specific date just yet. Once we are certain on when an upcoming release ships with this feature, we'll be sure to update this ticket.
            Cheers

Now that more Atlassian apps support user rename (for example, JIRA v6,) is this issue back on the radar?

We have made large improvements to the underlying API in Crowd and the database schema for the internal directory as part of its 2.0 release of Crowd.

As part of the 2.0 release of Crowd we will be offering user aliasing for our users, which will allow you to map a user in JIRA (for example) with user name 'janesmith' to a user in Crowd with the name 'janehope'. This is not user renaming but part of a solution to get around issues where an uses usernames as a primary key and don't provide the ability to rename users.

Post the 2.0 release of Crowd we will expose the user rename features of Crowd initially for the Internal Directory, please see the inked issues.

It would also be nice to be able to change the name of a group, as group fuctions can change as well.

Echoing Victor's comments, in our organization at least a few names changes occur every week. It would be nice to allow these folks to keep their user account, and stay linked to their personal space in Confluence, etc.

The bigger issue here is that in a large organisation where authentication is delegated to an LDAP server or AD, people get married and change their names. Their user IDs then change accordingly on those systems and things go pear-shaped on applications that use Crowd for authentication. It's a huge issue for us as right now the only way to resolve this is to create a new user.

We really need an resolution for this issue. Since Crowd 1.5 we would love to integration our Google Apps environment with Atlassian Crowd.

However our Crowd username differ from our Google account names. Change the Crowd user names won't work for us as we need the current Crowd user names for integration with tools suchs as Subversion. So extending Crowd with alias attributes would really be the way to go for us.
