      Status Update 5 March 2024

      Hi everyone,

Thank you for sharing your feedback in this ticket around the nesting limitations of the Editor. I'm pleased to share an update that we've just released to both Jira and Confluence Cloud.

      1. Actions can now be placed inside Lists (numbered, bulleted)

      2. Lists can now be quoted, including with actions inside them

      3. Panels - media, code blocks, actions, dividers, and decisions can be nested within a panel

      4. Nested Expands - nest lists, actions, code blocks, panels, quotes, dividers and decisions within a nested expand

To find out more about all these content nesting enhancements, check out the Community post.

These changes will be rolling out over the coming weeks to all accounts, so if you don't see them straight away, they'll be there soon!

Thanks so much for your feedback and patience.

      Regards,

      Description

There's currently no way to nest an bodied macro (like the Expand Macro) into another bodied Macro. This suggestion will help to track the interest for building this out.

In the previous editor, nesting Expand Macros was made possible as a result of CONFCLOUD-24201.

I created a ticket that is related to this one:  Add an excerpt macro within a table cell.
It's specifically for adding an 'excerpt' macro source to table cells.

Tables within table would be a great improvement. Also, tables within panels and expands within panels.

Please address this issue, it is seriously hindering working with Confluence.

Our documentation needs to work with variants, as not all our customers are on the same software version.

The Excerpt/Excerpt include macro is completely useless for me because I cannot use the Scroll Conditional Content macro, another bodied macro, inside it. And that makes the whole "no need for copy and pasting and repetitions" argument useless for us.

Please address this issue. It severely limits basic layout functionality in Confluence. Nesting macros is a fundamental feature that should be available. Without it, we lose much of the purpose behind using layouts to create well-structured, visually appealing pages.

Is it possible that this is still not working? People have been reporting this issue for 5 years. Confluence is a great tool, but this missing feature is a real drawback and extremely limit the product functionality.  Especially the inability to nest an expand within and excerpt!

What's more problematic is the lack of communication. If Atlassian is not planning to implement this, just state it clearly so that people know and stop complaining or hoping for it. Communication is key in this instances.

Again, I'm really grateful for the great tool, but a clear communication on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

            Thank you!

Atlassian – Did something change?  I was having trouble embedding the Page Properties Report in a table macro (i.e., Tables Plus - Advanced Tables Macro). BUT...

It WORKS if I use the Table Filter, Charts & Spreadsheets for Confluence macro.

Is there something they are doing that other apps aren't?  Can we get the other vendors (like AppFire) this information so we can get other apps working, too?!

            Thanks,

            Mark

My bank has chosen Confluence over really great wikis like Media Wiki because it thought that having a client-vendor relationship would lead to better outcomes when it comes to implementation of features.  I was dead-set against using Confluence because in my experience, open source software usually makes much better decisions – just compare Firefox with, say, Internet Explorer or even Edge.  Nobody is going to accuse Edge of being the better browser.

The decision to release an editor without the nested macro functionality just proves the point.  How any project manager can look at a proposal for a new editor that does not include nested macros and sign off on it is a mystery.  It smacks of development for development's sake.

For heaven's sake!  Please!  I would love to be wrong about open source software.  Does anybody truly think the new editor is worth it without nested macro functionality?  This is the type of thing that makes people hate Confluence.

There are several things that will not work in Cloud because of this.

            This is really annoying.

Nested macros are fundamental. We have lots of pages that are still in legacy mode because the functionality is just not there in Cloud. without the nested macros functionality the benefit of using Confluence compared to other tools is clearly reduced. I agree with Paul Fleer! It is really embarrassing having to constantly say: "that is n longer available in Confluence"

I agree with Paul Fleer, Simon Sahli, and Mark B Wager, and all other comments that state that Atlassian should focus on restoring all functionalities and fixing bugs (before working on new features). It's better to have Confluence cloud work like how Confluence server worked, then have new features on Confluence cloud while also having Confluence cloud fail to do things Confluence server was able to do.

Atlassian you should really focus on filling the functionality gaps between the Confluence Server to Confluence Cloud.
It is much worse to loose existing functionality than not having additional functionality for which there is a need.

It is just hard to explain and also frustrating that a change reduces existing (important) functionality.
Yes, there is some new nice things that we get with the Cloud, no doubt, but still loosing functionality always causes pain, for which you should try to find a suitable solution also in Cloud.

Thanks in advance for prioritizing this feature requests and other requests that address gaps between Confluence Server and Cloud.

I'd like to offer a sincere request to you, Atlassian --> please RESTORE ALL FUNCTIONALITY and FIX ALL BUGS BEFORE working on new features, bells, and whistles!

I echo the sentiments of the other commenters. Sadly the lack of Confluence Cloud functionality has set us back YEARS in our adoption of Confluence. And the reworking of pages has cost us hundreds of expensive hours!

In our business, we never mentioned SharePoint as an option – but the move to Confluence Cloud has re-opened the SharePoint door and MANY, MANY users are now looking for other alternatives to Confluence.

Forcing us off of Server to the cloud WITHOUT FIRST HAVING ALL THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY has been the biggest, most embarrassing debacle I've had to deal with in years as a system admin. I've had to say, "I'm sorry, but Confluence Cloud can't do that..." more times than I can count.

            Respectfully,

            Mark

My company just moved from Confluence Server to Confluence Cloud, and I have a lot of pages with tabs and complex formatting therein that are basically impossible for me to port over to the new editor successfully because I cannot embed key macros inside of tabs anymore.

Macros that do not embed inside tabs:

            • Expand
            • Excerpt
            • Table Of Contents Zone (having tab-specific TOCs was so nice on Server Confluence, and it's so frustrating that it doesn't work in the new editor on Confluence Cloud)
            • Other tabs layer (nested tabs)

Macros that do not embed inside Table Of Contents Zone:

            • Expand
            • Excerpt

Nested tabs is a nice to have, but oh boy not being able to embed a TOC Zone inside of tabs, and not being able to embed expand inside tabs nor TOC Zones is deeply aggravating.

Is nesting the layout macro in consideration under this feature request?

We love doing a half-split layout to get images on the left side and text on the right side, for our documentation with screenshots. Sometimes there are multiple versions (e.g., like for operating systems) and it would be nice to have them nested in expands to let the customer/user pick which one they want rather than having them on separate pages or having them on the same page and making it super long (yes, I know you can have headings and jump to them with the ToC macro, but it looks visually unappealing)

I'm still looking for the simple things:

            • Insert a note/tip/etc. panel in a list
            • Insert an image in a list (that is aligned with the text of the list item above it)
            • Insert a table in a list (that is aligned with the text of the list item above it)

Something is moving at last, happy to see this.
However, one of the most important for me is still missing, being able to have bodied macros in Excerpts, such as the Scroll Conditional Content one, a very important macro when creating user documentation.

This is BEYOND frustrating and disappointing that this is not a feature. As some as said we are being forced to move from server to cloud where we have been developing pages for 10+ years and have used the features available at the time. This might be the feature that makes me move on from Atlassian unless some workarounds can be provided.

I found an interesting work around within the UI:

            Create an outer expander
Add a Table inside that expander.
Add an expander inside the top-left box.
delete the rest of the columns and rows.

I really at least need to be able to put an expand section within an excerpt.  Without these abilities, it makes confluence more unmanageable, and considering that functionality used to exist this is a terrible experience for your customers.

It is crystal clear that this functionality is absolutely required as mentioned by everyone in the comments section.

Without this functionality, it is leading to sub-optimal workarounds and contributing to unnecessary overhead. The new editor should support interoperability between macros, otherwise what's the value in using Confluence Cloud?

Confluence has take a giant step backwards with this new experience. It is now extremely difficult to do basic things: nested macros, page templates, etc. Confluence used to be my go to for building vibrant and dynamic sites. However, this is more of a toy now for novice users only. PLEASE fix the many issues and bring back the ability to develop advanced pages. Lack of support for macro nesting is a show stopper!

Another team affected here...I was wondering if this was reported in 2019, there are more than 700 votes, why this has not been implemented yet?

We are in UAT for migration from Server to Cloud.  Our users are completely up in arms due to this missing and they work they will need to do to their pages once migrated.

Please advise on the path forward for this

This makes our migration from server to cloud really hard because we are using this a lot, also in user macros.

I need a simple way in the confluence cloud, to add the basic styles to the header row of the Expand feature.

+1 from me on this. I want to be able to add a numbered list to an Expand inside the cell of a table.

This is badly needed. We have several pages on the legacy editor and we're not looking forward to updating to the new editor because of this loss of functionality. And, not only can we not nest macros in panels, we don't even have the same level of customization as we did before with on-premise. Please implement. And while you're at it, please reopen this: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-66752 because the current panels still lack the same level of customization that we had on server.

The absence of this feature is precisely the reason why I am still using the legacy editor four years after it was supposed to have been superseded.

it's been over 3 years since you 'started working on this'
i need the same exact usecase as Tim in previous comment

(scroll ignore in combination with Page properties macro)

Not being possible to do this makes it enormously more complex for our users to create a clear and structured docuement based.

please provide an update on this so we know what to expect in the near X months

We need this feature to nest "Confluence page property macro" in "Scroll Ignore macro" (from Scroll Word Exporter APP). Otherwise we are not able to provide placeholder data which should not be printed into the word file.
