Thanks for your comments on this ticket.
As per https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-articles/Removing-the-Companion-app-from-Confluence-Cloud/ba-p/1884657#M3406 we won't be fixing the Companion App on Cloud.
Again as per the article above if you are currently using the Companion app, here are some alternatives to try:
- Use the /slash command to embed Google Drive files and edit these in real-time with your colleagues.
- Manually replace the file from the Attachments page by deleting and re-uploading the file or by dragging and dropping the file.
Summary
Users are unable to edit office files externally when previewing them in the new editor. In preview mode the user would not have the Edit With option, provided by Atlassian Companion, and will only allow the file to be downloaded.

Steps to Reproduce
- Create a page using the new editor;
- Insert an office file into the page (i.e. a .xlsx spreadsheet);
- Publish the page, and click the recently inserted file;
Expected Results
- User should be able to have the option to click Edit With and open the file on an external application, via Atlassian Companion, when previewing the file;
Actual Results
- User is only able to either Download or Close the file preview, and no option to open the file externally.
Notes
- You can test this behavior with this file: Atlassian Test - Excel.xlsx
Workaround
- Open page
- Go to "Attachments" list (using the ... button -> Attachments)
- Find your attachment and click View
- In preview mode you'll be able to edit the file by clicking Edit With.
