Multiple formats of the same font (bold, italic etc.) can be used if collated in a *.ttc file, but some users would want to use more than one font family in their exports.
This issue should also cover the current workaround for special characters in PDF documents. The current workaround is documented here:

By default our PDF documents should be capable of handling these special characters.
