Problem Definition
The Issue Navigator allows re-ordering of items in search results temporarily (mostly for visualization apparently - since this doesn't actually update the issues, re-prioritise or re-rank them in any way in the backend). One draw-back with this feature, is that it gets in the way of simple copy and paste of content (e.g. copying (HTML) rows of issues that can be embedded into an email, document, blog post etc. - very useful) from the issue navigator. Select and copy of rows becomes impossible except when selecting from the very top of the table because the cursor switches to the draggable-mode when you try to select any rows except from the top row.
Suggested Solution
The ability to select and copy content from the issue navigator may actually be of more practical advantage than the ability to drag things around.
- Improve the issue navigator styling so that it's still possible to select and copy any rows from the issue navigator table.
- Provide a way to disable the dragable feature in favor of ability to select and copy, if we can't have both at the same time.
Workaround
- If you switch the issue navigator to printable view, there is no drag and drop feature in that layout, and copying and pasting text is possible from any part of the table.
- Ofcourse this adds one additional step that is hard to get all users to be familiar with or remember just for a simple 'copy text' support that should always be available consistently on a web interface.
- It is possible to disable the dragging of subtask through the use of a dark feature.
- Login to Jira as an administrator
- Navigate to $JIRAbaseURL/secure/SiteDarkFeatures!default.jspa
- add the value of com.atlassian.jira.issuetable.draggable.disabled to the enable dark feature and click Add
However this will prevent the dragging of subtasks both on the issue details page and through the issue navigator. Note: In the issue details view you will still see the up and down arrows that can be used to rearrange the order of these subtasks.
Notes
This isn't a trivial requirement if we consider that versatility of interacting with content is supposed to be a key advantage of web interfaces. Having select and copy disabled or impaired unintentionally like this, is a regression of basic web browsing functionality.
- Taking screenshots of parts of the issue navigator as an alternative to select and copy is far less useful, as it doesn't have the advantage of clickable links that you get when you select and copy the content instead.
