      Japanese IME works as follows.

      What is IME?

If you would like to type "亜",

      1. Select Japanese IME
      2. Type a character "a" ("a" is the pronunciation of "亜")
      3. Press Space key
      4. Select "亜" from the candidates of Japanese/Chinese characters whose pronunciation is "a"
      5. Press Enter key
      6. Now, the character "a" is converted to "亜"

Please see ime.mov for the detail.
