NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

      Original request description:

All my JIRA projects use Kanban boards as a primary user interface for all users. I see no use cases where I would want to set up JIRA without Kanban boards. The Kanban method and Kanban boards are just as useful for business projects as for software development projects. Kanban boards for business projects should preferably be free from any software jargon and hard-coded software-specific behavior. With the announcement of JIRA 7 Software, it seems that JIRA Agile boards may become even more software-specific in future releases.

Having to go for the full JIRA Software license just to get Kanban boards available in business projects is far from ideal. Higher cost is just one reason. Added complexity for users from seeing irrelevant software features and terminology is more important.

Along with many others, I have previously requested more flexible configuration options for JIRA Agile boards, in particular more dynamic filters.

Please consider adding a generic, flexible Kanban board as part of JIRA Core, or at least as an add-on.

[JRASERVER-45690] Add Kanban board functionality to Jira Core

You won't see this feature being implemented for Jira Cora Server. Switch to Jira Work Management (the new Jira Core on Cloud) and you'll have a board solution build in. Don't count on any new features/functions for server. They won't come.

            Hi guys,

We understand Kanban board is a very important but missing feature in Core and Service Desk projects (we know as we also use Jira internally), so we have tried hard to bring that to you via this plugin https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1222860/jira-board

It has even more powerful features then Jira Core Board in cloud such as:

            • Transition, rank issues anywhere on board based on workflow configuration (Yes you can configure multiple workflows per issue type).
            • View and edit issue details via the full issue details view popup or even more handy with inline issue edit.
            • Filtering issues based on assignee, labels or JQL based Quick Filters configured in Board Settings.
            • Group issues by assignee, subtasks. You're able to collapse columns as well to make the board cleaner.
            • Other powerful board settings:
              • Column status mapping and other column mutations: create / delete / rename / reorder. Moreover, you can set column constraints (min / max) based on issue count.
              • Card colours based on issue types, priorities or even JQL for more advanced use cases.
              • Card Layouts settings to add more fields displayed to cards on board .

It's available now on Atlassian marketplace, you can try for free. We're always open for feedback and suggestions, feel free to contact us via https://c4f.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/3

In 100 years will Atlassian add Kanban board to Jira Core?

In the era of remote work Kanban board is a must for any kind of project. Atlassian are you in the hibernation process in the next 95 years?
Kanban board is the most requested and voted feature for Jira Core since year 2015.

Probably #COVID2100 will appear before Kanban board!

We recently upgraded our Jira Server license in no small part due to this feature.

I evaluated the current state of Jira using a cloud trial to see what was new. Looked good and we pulled the trigger on upgrading our current server.

Much to my surprise, Jira Cloud and Jira Server are a lot more dissimilar than I was expecting.

Now debating if we try to refund our purchase or just learn to not trust Atlassian as much in the future...

Hello, in our "business" project, some issue should be considered as done through "Kanban method". A board with filters (such as this type of issue, custom field value, etc...) could help to display the right issues which should be managed this way.

            thank you

Hello, in the company I am working for, we use Jira server and not Jira cloud, so that it is very useful to have for all business models  the Jira kanban board.

For project management I can create tasks/User story but I cannot see them and organize on a board for priority and status.

In this case I cannot use business project management model but I have to switch to SW template  for the scope that I need.

Please, will you think to implement the Kanban board also for business  project management model with Jira server

Sorry but I just don't understand who is supposed to be the target audience for this software. Maybe someone who has been frozen for the past 10 years.

I have really tried to use it with my team, doomed to fail from the start.

It is both bloated (slow, unfriendly UI) and crippled feature-wise (not having such a basic feature as agile boards in the standalone version? First version of iOS mobile app released a month ago?)

And the fact that this page took more than 20 second just to get the first response from the server kinda gives you a good picture of how snappy this thing is.

            @Andrey Kozynets
Thanks, Andrey. The only problem that it doesnt say anywhere in this article that you can only create a board if you select "Project Management" template and (What a wonder!) when you create "Scrum" or "Kanban" project in Jira Core you dont (!!!) get a Scrum or a Kanban or any board. Despite the fact that boards are advertized as part of these templates in the "what is this" feature description.

This is so misleading to not say false advertizing

Yes, Jira Core on the cloud already have Kanbans, please implement it on the server release. We aren't asking for full software development tools, just a simple Kanban. It would be awesome for projects that aren't development.

Adding a basic Kanban board to Jira Core is pretty essential for anyone in our organization to actually want to use the product.  Without this there are better tools to implement issue tracking systems for non-software development users (e.g. HR, Finance, etc...).  I would say for us, most people want a kanban board and maybe scrum, but most people aren't doing software development.

The reasoning here is completely flawed. Every major task management app these days includes some sort of Kanban board, and given that "Core" is actually a slimmed-down copy, there's no reason for them not to have included a Kanban board, except for - money. Denis is absolutely right about this. It was a business, not a user-decision.

While I really like Core for what it is, it cannot compete with 100s of other tools, unless you're already hooked to the Atlassian empire, paying thousands of USD a year.

The actual reason is different, it is called "Marketing" and "Money". Ask yourself why did they recently divided Jira into Core and Software. And why Software costs more. And would you buy Software if you had a proper Kanban board functionality in Core?

But why is on cloud so?  We were testing firstly on cloud (I think almost everybody do that). We put a lot of work to know the product, find if fit to our needs.

Then it was budgeted. And after that on server shows up that there are no one of most important function.

It could be ok, but the server version should have different name. f e:    "Jira server without board". Or disable board also in cloud version. So user at the beginning see what he wants to buy.  Now it is a little bit trickery:   User try something better, accept  the price , and  get something worse for the price. And You know exactly that it is work this way.

            Aren't You ashamed?

            Hi all,

our business teams are willing to use Jira Core but missing a way to easy visualize their issues and workflow e.g. for teammeetings. The Kanban-boards would be the perfect way.

Using Jira Cloud is not an option for us.

When this feature will be implemented we would have a lot more users in the whole company.

Many thanks for considering the development again.

This is hands down the feature my users want the most so that's beyond disappointing. This feels like highway robbery.

This is why for our future investments we have priritized changes to mail server configuration.

            lmao who's asking for that?

            Hi all,

Thanks for participating in this issue, either by voting, commenting or watching. We value your feedback in all forms and suggestions in Jira.atlassian.com is no different.

Back in May, we commented on this issue with our decision to not prioritize boards in Jira Core Server in the immediate future. We have followed the conversation after the announcement and revisited this suggestion recently.

After looking at the entire set of requests, feedback and analytics across the Jira customer base, boards for Jira Core is not on our roadmap for the next 12 months.

I understand this decision will be disappointing to those of you who voted for this issue. This is why I wanted to bring more context around it.

This was one of the hardest calls we had to make recently. We are all aware that boards are important for Jira Core users. Still, we have to look at the broader picture of the Jira Server products as a whole and make sure that we prioritize our investments correctly.

We are seeing Jira deployments growing considerably, both in size and mission-criticality. As a result, we are prioritizing performance and stability investments in our current roadmap. While we would love to continue expanding the use cases for Jira Core with boards, we believe that investing in the core platform infrastructure to handle the user growth is our #1 priority.

We also realise that many asspects of Jira administration are challenging. This is why for our future investments we have priritized changes to mail server configuration. Also we are just about to release the ability to add different priorities for different projects. These are investments that will benefit both Jira Server and Jira Core.

We plan to revisit our decision regarding boards in 6 months and we'll keep you updated with any new information we have on this topic.

Gosia Kowalska added a comment - Hi all, Thanks for participating in this issue, either by voting, commenting or watching. Even though we're not able to respond to every single comment you add, we really appreciate all of them as it helps us make better product decisions, so please keep them coming. It's not clear to me why there isn't a Kanban board on JIRA Core, I mean, unless you want people to buy it for the cheaper price and then understand you can't really work with it so you have no choice but upgrade to JIRA Software...

I'm a project manager at a non-software company and JIRA Core is just a waste of time for me without it.

But you have to pay for JIRA software server users separately. JIRA core server licence for 25 users costs 1200 USD, JIRA software server licence for 25 users costs 1800 USD. It shows that the board costs around 600 USD.

It would be understandable if the server version is just lagging behind a little, but to intentionally not build out a CORE feature of JIRA CORE that is a CORE part of your advertisement is simply:

            FALSE ADVERTISING.

UPDATE: In the process of solving this with JIRA support.  I think it's going to work for us to add the JIRA Software application.

... install the Software application under the Administration page -> Applications Tab. Once Software is installed, you should run a reindex and verify that your Software-based projects are properly associated to the Software project type. During the Software installation process, you will be prompted for your license key. You can find your Software license at my.atlassian.com or you can generate an Eval license temporarily until you can input your Commercial license.

We moved to JIRA Server company wide (250 software + 250 core users) early this year based on the idea that some type of basic task board for the Core users would be forthcoming in an upcoming release. We are dedicated to Agile processes, and visibility/transparency is integral to our processes.

We don't necessarily need Scrum or Kanban features in a Core board, even a basic task board that follows the base Core project type workflows would be better than nothing. Some of my business teams used an older instance of JIRA with Greenhopper boards for a number of years without problem.  We decide to spend a substantial amount of money to upgrade to the latest version and then find out that someone at Atlassian has decided that we don't need this feature. We look for tools that are adaptable to our processes. In this case, we are forced to change our processes to fit the limitations of a (very expensive) tool. Now I am faced with having to pay substantial extras to change my Core users to Software users (and for add-ons) just to have a task board which they already had prior to the upgrade.

Atlassian may be listening but they are just not hearing.

I have just spent half an hour looking for how to set up kanban board in my JIRA Core installation because I can see Kanban board on JIRA Core's webpage!!!

I'm testing JIRA Core to see how suitable it is for a non-sw-development team. It would seem it isn't. JIRA Software on the other hand is a bit too sw-development centric to be useful.

This is literally in the advertised feature set for JIRA Core, as the leading image no less - it seems insane that it isn't present given this. The split between cloud and server is also really disappointing. This does not seem to be clearly documented anywhere.

Clearly this has been implemented in cloud; so is there a timeframe on when this might arrive for server? Thanks.

I am really frustrated with the absence of the board feature in JIRA Core Server. It is the most important feature of JIRA. If what Atlassian wants is JIRA Core Server without the board feature, they should at least clearly notice us the fact that the feature is only included in Cloud version and is missing in the Server version, especially before the payment. I'm deeply disappointed with you, Atlassian.

I echo everyone's sentiment here.  We want the Board feature without adding the complex JIRA Software functionality.  Like everyone else, I expected the same functionality from Cloud to Server and very disappointed after purchasing the Server version.

A cloud-first approach to products is a valid and perfectly understandable development strategy, but I fundamentally object to cloud versions having different features or just being better than on-premise versions. If you are planning to drop support for on-premise then be honest about it and give customers a timescale in which to migrate to cloud or find alternative products. The stealth approach of gradually hobbling the feature-set and capabilities of the on-premise version to the point where it is no longer a viable product is going to seriously anger your many passionate and loyal customers.

There are many very sound reasons why customers want or need to have an on-premise solution so this is not an acceptable situation.

            Hey guys,

Totally agree. I don't understand why this feature is not rolled out for JIRA Core Server. It adds very much value to the whole product !!!

Maybe you guys at Atlassian forget all customers in Europe, especially in Germany, with high statutory requirements at data protection. If we want to be sure, that everything is fine regarding data protection, we have to host software in our own datacenter or in a datacenter in europe. The easy way is a self-hosted server version.
Regarding this topic, I am disappointed from your decision.
More than that, it is a reason not to use JIRA core for at least 25 employees outside the IT department.

As someone who works with the Kanban Board with the DevOps department and without the board with Marketing / Product Management, I can guarantee you there is an incredible difference in user experience.

The board makes everything faster, easier and simply more efficient.

I am sure many JIRA Server Core users currently do not complain because they simply don't know what they are missing out on. Please don't withhold this awesome feature from them!

P.D.: You should honestly give us open feedback about how you expect both product lines to develop in the future. So after two years of up-votes you decide to not implement what many of your customers consider an absolutely essential feature. Not very agile, I'm disappointed.

We just bought JIRA Core Server for our team in the hopes of eventually replacing our physical Kanban board with JIRA on a big screen. I was convinced that it would only be a matter of time until the top advertised feature from cloud would arrive on server. Guess I was wrong.
