      Atlassian Update – 20 Jan 2025

Thank you for reporting this issue. In the last weeks we have been working hard on fixing it.

      Summary of the problem:

The Activity Stream gadget was showing some texts (Comment, Vote, ...) in the language different from the logged in user's language setting. It was in fact shown in the language of the first request to that gadget (usually this was the language of the first user that logged into Jira instance after start/restart).
The root cause of the issue was the key in one of internal caches did not include language, only the gadget URI.

      New behaviour after the change:

The gadget shows texts in user's language.

Status of the fix and Fix Version:

The fix is ready, and we’re moving the status of this ticket to Waiting for release with Fix Version 10.2.0.

Jira 9.12 (JSM 5.12) (LTS) backport notice

The fix has been  backported to Jira 9.12.x and will be released in JSW 9.12.18 (JSM 5.12.18).

      Summary

Recently, this bug was fixed. However, it seems that this bug is still happening in some cases, where Japanese (or Chinese) characters are visible in some gadgets.

This seems to be due to the fact that the fix to that bug had to be applied to all gadgets and possibly, not all gadgets were fixed.

This problem seems to be intermittent and the same gadgets that sometimes show the characters, sometimes are in English.

The text for the issue operation links shown per each activity stream item will sometimes be shown in a language different from the current user's locale.

      Steps to Reproduce

In an instance that was affected by JRA-28392, if gadgets were not fixed, they may show in different languages.

      1. Change a user's (UserA) profile language to a language other than the configured default
      2. Restart JIRA
      3. Login as the UserA and visit a dashboard with the activity stream gadget
      4. Login as another user (UserB) that has no configured language
      5. Access a dashboard with the activity stream gadget as UserB
      6. The date and action links showed in German (UserA's configured language) while the rest of the screen was in English (the system default)

      Expected Results

The gadgets are in showing in the correct language.

      Actual Results

They may show in different languages, as JRA-28392 may still be affecting it.

      Workarounds

      1. Try the steps from the KB article Setting locale in Jira to set Language = English and Country = US explicitly. A restart of JIRA is required for it to take effect.
      2. Disable and re-enable JIRA Activity Stream Plugin, this can be found under Manage add-ons > Select System > Look for "JIRA Activity Stream Plugin", this helps for some of the customers.

            Hi @everyone.

I managed to find the plug in, ours was showing in Polish suddenly after some coleagues cleared their cookies.
I restarted the plugin JIRA Activity Stream Plugin (disable and enable), the gadget needs some time to come up. I recommend to perform this action once admin have to perform maintenance / upgrade. Users won't be affected then.

Our plugin was offline for 5 minutes with 2 running nodes.

Hopefully this helps with the bug.

We are going to test the workaround #1 (Java parameter: -Duser.language=en -Duser.country=US), but a bugfix from Altlassian development would be more than welcome.

            Hello,

Our team is also experiencing this issue on Jira Server 8.13.9.
Our default language is set to English (United States), but the Activity Stream started to act funny awhile ago and switched the language to Portuguese.

The same issue appears on the dashboards where the Activity Stream gadget is used or on the Profile information page.
The workaround didn't help us either.

Hello, we're also experiencing this issue on Jira Server 8.13.8. The workaround didn't help, the language that is displayed is still the one from the first user to log in after a restart.

NB: it's only happening in the bottom part ("happened XX hours ago") on the My Profile's activity entries.

Hello... I am experiencing this in Jira Data Center 8.13.3 with a two node cluster.  We typically see the issue on Node 01 with Japanese characters.  I have bounced the system and made sure that I am the first person (with English) to log into both nodes and load the activity stream on both nodes.  That has not corrected the problem.

Hopefully Atlassian will fix this in a future LTS release.

            Hi

this problems occurs still in Jira 8.5.5 (mix of german and english)

The workaround (for us) is to restart Jira and be the first in the activity stream gadget with the proper language layout. Disabling and re-enabling "JIRA Activity Stream Plugin" did NOT fix the issue.

The workaround with disabling the activity feed in the add-ons/system worked for me only when I disabled it, and then viewed the gadget that was broken, then re-enabled it. It did not work when I disabled it, then immediately re-enabled it. This was on 7.13.3.

The version report also includes mixed language issues. The workarounds suggested by Atlassian Support do not resolve the functionality required by users.  The first user that accesses a server ought to not be the one that sets language for all other users until the next restart.   Each node ought to display all headers, labels and server generated information in multiple languages as per each user profile.

We are on Jira 7.12.3 and are affected by this bug. We are a multi-lingual organisation and need the activity stream to match the user's profile. Atlassian, please provide a patch for this. Below suggested workarounds doesn't always work and its just ridiculous to restart Jira and have system outage so often to fix this issue.

            Atlassian support suggested Workaround

            Option 1

We've seen moderate success with the following workaround

            1. Disable and re-enable JIRA Activity Stream Plugin, this can be found under Manage add-ons > Select System > Look for "JIRA Activity Stream Plugin", this helps for some of the customers.
            Option 2

If the above option does not resolve it, try the following:

            1. Restart Jira on problematic node
            2. As soon as it's up, make sure a user having same language as the instance setting 'default language' is the first to logging to it.
            3. This should reset the activity stream functionality and prevent mixed-up languages in it

In general the workaround should be valid, however, please be aware that the problem can re-occur on instance restarts when a user with another language is the first to access it.

Option 1 is unreasonable and option 2 didn't work. Try the following:

            1. Restart Jira
            2. As soon as it's up accesses it with a user who is set to the same language as the instance setting 'default language'
            3. This should reset the activity stream functionality and prevent mixed-up languages in it

In general the workaround should be valid, however, please be aware that the problem can re-occur on instance restarts when a user with a language other than Jira's default language is the first user to login.

This just started happening to us 2 or 3 days ago. Our JIRA was fully English. Suddenly Japanese started appearing in the Activity Stream.

We are using Atlassian JIRA Project Management Software (v7.7.0#77001-sha1:3be3151)

We are on Standalone server Jira 7.8.1.
Still an issue in this version.

Disabling and enabling JIRA Activity Stream Plugin fixed it but not before background re-indexing the instance.

Before re-indexing the instance the gadget was not rendered throwing an error.

I specifically had to stop and restart Jira ACTIVITY STREAM Plugin under addons/system. I would try that, if that what you did then..  :/

I also considered removing all languages – that didnt work in my case anyway.

@Atlassian Please bear in mind that although it´s not a big issue there are still customers who use JIRA and can see this issue whenever they use the activity stream to review their activity. So we as a company should provide at least any information about the ETA of the fix. Cheers

I also noticed this issue for the first time this morning. Recently a clone was made of our production instance and the error is not present in that environment, so this has happened in the last two weeks or so but I cannot identify any change in the system that could have caused this. The only changes recently have been general admin configurations.

The difference I see, is the mix of german and english only shows on the specific Activity Stream that is located on the User Profile page and on the Project Summary page (those that I cannot edit or remove by design). The issue does not persist on the Activity Stream gadget that is placed on a dashboard manually which is editable to me.

Using v 6.3.15. The production instance was shut down and restarted today but the issue still present.

We also have seen this issue, and only with the Activity Stream. The suggested fix of "Refresh Client Resources" described JRA-28392 and JSP-234254 did not resolve the issue. We also do not have translations displaying incorrectly as described in JRA-28392's other attached bitmaps. I have attached a sample from out Activity Stream.

The mixed languages seem to only come from the operations links in the activity stream.

Discussing this with mquail, we believe that this is limited to the activity streams gadget and these UI elements in it.

Root cause analysis needs to be on this problem before we confirm this as a verified bug report.
