Add abililty to report/graph project trends

We'd like to be able to generate some project statistics/trend graphs
from JIRA to assist project management. The type of report we are after would graph the number of issues (that meet the report criteria) against time.

e.g. A fault density report that would show the number of
issues created on a given day

No. of Faults

---------------------------
1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5 Day

Other examples:

• total open issues (ie issues in open state) each week
• number of issues that are resolved each day
• number of issues that are close each day
  etc

Basically we are trying to report trends so that the PMs can easily see how a project is doing.

JIRA doesn't have to be able to graph the data (tho that would be nice).

It would be sufficient to be able to export it to excel easily. It would be even better to be able to export it to a supplied excel template (so we could create a report/graph template in excel, upload the template & JIRA fills it out with the data to produce the report).
