If a very long non-wrappable string is added to a description in JIRA, the entire page is stretched to fit the string. This results in custom fields looking like they don't contain any data, due to the values being pushed off the right-hand side of the screen.

May I suggest simply adding a horizontal scrollbar to the description block, so as to keep the page width within the available width of the screen.
