Most email clients add a 'In-Reply-To: <messageid>' header, when replying to a message. This allows the client to keep track of mail threads. It would be nice if JIRA added this header to email notifications, so that all mails relating to a certain issue would be grouped in a thread. In established projects, 80% of the traffic is bug reports and updates, and such a feature would make a big difference.

[JRASERVER-1113] Add threading to notification emails

Seems simple enough to record the message id on creation, and then add it to replies.

I did some experimenting, and it looks like if a Message-ID: header is added by the MUA (in my case, mutt), then the MTA won't modify it or try to add another one. Makes sense, since a mail goes through multiple MTAs.

            Jeff,

I agree this would be a cool feature! The only question, how can JIRA get the message ID of the original mail? I believe this is generated by the outgoing mail server, and hence JavaMail has no knowledge of it?

            Cheers,
            Mike
