Atlassian status as of March 2024

      Hello all,

There are no current plans to introduce additional configurations to scrolling on the board (Kanban board, Active sprint(s), Board). However, we will keep monitoring this suggestion for votes. To recap here is the current state...
Team-managed projects have fixed-width columns. And there is scrolling once columns exceed the page width.
Company-managed projects columns will fill the screen, and once a minimum column width is reached scrolling is introduced.

      Thanks
      Eoin
      Jira Software

      Summary

Currently kanban columns are auto-sized to fit to screen and when using a small screen, the size of the columns makes them completely unusable.

      Suggestion

As an agile project manager, it is desirable to have horizontal scrolling available on kanban boards.
It would also be desirable to have some minimum width after which a scroll bar will appears to allow side scrolling.

Create a configuration to toggle this feature ON and OFF.

It would be helpful to have this as an option. We would like to get rid of the scrolling in team-managed projects.

I've been working with Jira for years and since someone came up with this horitzontal scroll it's been a real pain.

I want the columns to adjust automatically as they always did, having a fixed column width makes no sense, having many columns is just a bad implementation of SCRUM.

How can I make the columns adjust automatically to the screen again?

However, the columns are too narrow. This ideally would've included some setting to widen the columns to a prescribed width.

Why these things have to be implemented piece meal is beyond me.

A toggle if you put this rubbish feature back on please!!!

This should be standard practice but Atlassian lumber us with some absolute rubbish changes which slow down Jira.

Some of us dont  find the need  for 30 statuses and scroll bar is rubbish as it was implemented when 6 had a scroll and was unusable.

As for us, what we want is to see the big picture with all columns shown on screen, but what we have is hidden columns and the annoying horizontal scrollbar.

Please make it configurable on each board so everyone can have what they need !

Cmon guys... Please, enable horizontal scrollbar again.

It was enabled before (I had opt-in some time ago) and now the horizontal scrollbar is gone. All teams here complained. Having a squeezed Kanban board is practically impossible to work with. I don't have just "to do, doing and done" states. I have much more and I don't need to see all of them in the "same screen/view". At least on Kanban templates. It's impossible to work with a professional Kanban system without horizontal scrolling.

Guys, you can check my suggested solution that could potentially address both card width resize & horizontal scrolling issues. Votes needed.

Unfortunately I couldn't opt-in because we block access to Google Docs.

That being said, whatever images are being posted are apparently also not showing up.

I am a plugin developer and this issue has also affected me a lot, in the end I had to make 2 versions: One for the instances that do not have the board with horizontal scroll and another for the boards where Atlassian has put them... a lot of trouble!
In my opinion, the features that a plugin can do do not need to be implemented by Atlassian, since we are seeing the result here. And more work for me...

Agree with other posters, one / two weeks ago the new horizontal scrolling feature was useable but the minimum column width was too high so it was scrolling when it didn't actually need to. Only scroll when it really needs it please.

Today columns on the right hand side are wrapping back round to the left - cannot tell what is Done and what is Ready for Dev.
            Jira is now almost unusable.

            Please remove the wrapping asap.

Please put the horizontal scroll bar feature back but default it to off and allow users to switch the feature on (in the board settings, or in a user's individual view e.g. under the three dots menu). Allow columns to get fairly narrow before scroll bar appears as a last resort.

This is total rubbish for this crap feature to be forced on ALL of us when we don't need.

Our projects can no longer use in calls as the scroll bar is unusable and for some reason is there when adding columns during set up of new workflows Jira is running like a snail since this defect was released - I cannot call it a feature!

If you need a board with 30 columns maybe different boards are required.

Please allow us to have a choice not a rubbish feature to be forced on us all.

Totally agree with Felix, now I сan use our board normally with 67% zoom only. Its very bad implementation and there is no option to сhange it somehow, its not what users requested in this feature.

It seems that this feature has been rolled out with a very high minimum column width, which is causing us a lot of headaches!

I do understand the motivation behind the feature request, in that there is a point as which the tickets become too squashed for the board to be usable and introducing a horizontal scroll is a viable compromise, but the new implementation has gone way too far in the other direction.

Our main company boards have 11 columns, and this was very comfortable with a window sized around 1300px - 1400px. With the new implementation there is now totally unnecessary scrolling even when full screen on a 1920px wide (1080p / FHD) monitor. I would probably have said below 800px is where it used to become unusable, although I am currently unable to check this on the site since access to the old sizing has been removed.

If I'm not mistaken, it also seems like a feature that made the font (and maybe padding) slightly smaller to help the columns fit into a smaller window has been removed. This worked absolutely fine beforehand and was very commonly used, so now it very much feels like we've got unnecessarily large text in unnecessarily wide columns causing an unnecessarily horizontal scroll!

I think with a bit of tweaking a sensible solution can be found, however in the meantime please can I request an opt-in/opt-out toggle as detailed in the description of this issue!

The changing of the Jira board implemented that makes all of the cards bigger, and added horizontal scrolling... has made our boards almost unusable.
You can no longer go to the board and get a 'big picture' view. Now you can only see a few cards on the screen at a time.
This makes using the boards during meetings involve... Change browser zoom level, click on ticket, change browser zoom level back... not the right ticket? close ticket, change browser zoom level, click ticket, change browser zoom level.
If Trellos board functionality was what was wanted for the Jira board - would have been using Trello in the first place.
Jira needs to change it back to the way it was, or at least allow for settings to allow us to choose how we want the boards to work.

Our team has several columns which makes it difficult to read because the columns have shrunk too much

            2 suggestions:

            1. Set a default (larger) width and allow horizontal scrolling (just like Trello).
            2. Allow the user to set the width of the columns.

Without that feature on Sprint / Kanban view, I am considering using other SAAS for one of my team. Right now we are using Trello but there are no view filters, so we thought about switching to Jira but here we don't have horizontal scroll for multiple columns view.

Yeah, "team managed" projects have it too.  I think they know we need it but are stuck for whatever reason in adding it to "company managed" projects.

That is great Sara, thank you.   Definitely not an elegant or permanent solution, but it might be enough to stave off our users until a non-Chrome-specific, non-add-on, non-training-dependant solution becomes available.

If you press "Shift" while you scroll the middle wheel of your mouse you'll scroll horizontally.

(You must have the extension "Better JIRA" enabled)

I hope this trick helps at least one person

For Christ sake, a lot of companies are moving from Jira on Premises to Jira Cloud and there is NO WAY to turn on/off a horizontal scroll bar yet?? Jira on Premises has this feature. It is impossible to read the column's titles with more than 10 columns. I have upstream and downstream Kanban together. I simply can't believe Jira Cloud doesn't have this feature...

Yikes, this still hasn't been done?

One of our departments requires 22 columns.  Half of them are still on tiny little laptop screens, making matters worse.  They (and I) were shocked that horizontal scroll is not an option.  The "Better Jira" add-on doesn't solve the issue as there is still no scroll bar - the only way to scroll is to click and drag on the screen to force the browser to move left/right (terrible user experience).

The functionality of "Better Jira" should just be built into Jira, it's pretty clear (and if fixed column width is enabled, scroll bar should automatically be enabled).

The saddest thing is that you can actually see the scroll bar working perfectly on the screen for about 1/10th of a second before Jira's page formatting removes it.  (can't attach screenshot, apparently, but trust me it's there!)

Having an extension enabled is a band-aid.

Some organizations have TIGHT controls on Browser extensions and other they are completely disallowed.

This functionality NOT being enabled OOTB by Atlassian isn't just sad, it's ridiculous.

If a browser extension solves it, why precisely cannot what that browser extension does NOT be implemented by Atlassian itself?
It's not like the browser extension is charging money for their extension, so it's not a "purchase a plugin" excuse.

I respectfully submit to you, @Tejasvita that this is shameful on the part of Atlassian.

Stop ADDING things, and START correcting things, please.

Same as Rob, the min width works, but no horizontal scrolling.  So it just shifts the columns out of view...

Great initiative! The screen resize part works for me but there is no scrolling bar (neither in Firefox, nor Chrome).

This would improve my life so much - our kanban board is very hard to scan on a laptop screen.
