New issue view fails to load attachments when there are too many attachments

      Atlassian Update—1 June 2020

      Hi everyone,

We have created a new ticket for this issue that specifically tracks this issue for > 120 attachments. The new ticket will remove the noise from the current ticket where the issue has been resolved for some users but not for others.

We will close off this ticket and ask that anyone still affected by this issue to vote/watch the new ticket: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-74515

Thank you for your continued support as we work to improve the new issue view in Jira.

      Atlassian Update—4 May 2020

We have rolled out an improvement which allows Jira to reliably handle 120 attachments per issue. We expect this to solve the problem for ~75% issues currently affected.

We are continuing to consider a longer-term fix and will keep you updated in this ticket.

      Summary

If you attach a large number of attachments on an issue the new issue view fails to load them.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Attach more than 150 attachments on an issue.
      2. Try to view the attachments on issue view.

      Expected Results

Attachments load and the thumbnails of attachments are visible on the issue view.

      Actual Results

Attachments show "Failed to load" error.

      Workaround

The attachments load successfully in the old issue view. Please disable the new issue view via Avatar > Personal settings and toggling the switch for the New Jira issue view.

The issue has been partially fixed. Issues in the new issue view can now support 120 attachments safely before failing.

A new ticket has been created to handle the case where attachments fail because there is over 120 on an issue: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-74515

            Hi Alan,

Thank you for adding further context here, it's useful to know that this is blocking you from using the new issue view.

We'll keep this ticket updated as we consider a longer-term fix.

Hi Matthew, thank you for the update however it seems we are in the 25% that your fix is unsuccessful for!  We have 287 attachments on the first issue I reviewed this morning which is typical for us as most comments are annotated with a screenshot image - the size of the attachments is not big, there are just a large number of them!  Working without supporting images would be very hard for us so we are confined to the old view currently - please can you roll out a fix for the remainder of the users in the 25%!

            Hi Matt,

The result is looking good on my side - recent issues with 100+ attachments are displaying correctly!! Thank you so much!

I'll keep an eye on it and reach out again if necessary.

            Just a strange question.

How can a severity be 3, when it's affecting multiple users?

There is 40 affected customers, 80+ watchers... And it's 2 months in work?

I had the same problem.  HTTP Status code 431 on attachments calls.  The workaround worked for me, thanks.

Hi Peggy, this is happening anywhere between 4-5 attachments to more than 60. It doesn't seem to be a numbers thing in our case.

            Hi,

Our users typically comment on issues with attachments dropped inline as part of the message (screenshots / files) and therefore they end up inline within the comments, but also show as attachments in the attachments panel.

The big issue for us is we use the images inline to communicate drawing changes for example and share screenshots of marked up drawings for revision - so without these showing it is unworkable to use the issue thread to collaborate - especially as our teams are multi language and the images are therefore critical in explaining the required revisions / work.  It is much appreciated that you are looking into this!

Hi, everyone. Thanks for raising this issue and for your comments and feedback.

We’re working on the problem, but there are a few ways we might fix it and understanding your specific scenario could help speed up the process.

If you’re experiencing this problem, do you generally have:

            • more than 60 attachments in the attachments panel (added directly to issues)?
            • most attachments within content (description and comments)?
            • an even mix of both attachments in the attachments panel and in content (description and comments)?

Thanks again for your feedback. We hope to have a fix out to you soon.

            Hi all,
I am Gustavo, I lead one of the teams looking into the new issue view.
I just wanted to give you all an update on the progress of this issue.
We are investigating the different approaches we can use to fix this bug as soon as possible and we will try to find a short term solution to mitigate the problem. As the investigation and the fix might take some time, an alternative is to use the old issue view for now. You can do that by navigating to settings from the left-hand side of the screen and switch off the issue experience lab toggle.
Sorry about it and thanks for the patience.

I feel this severity is not really minor and rather a severity 1 or 2.

Our users use images embedded in the comments on the regular so this is really impeding their work flow.

We are 100% next-gen so the workaround does not work. This is data loss effectively as we cannot see images we attach.

How is this bug not getting fixed in a timely fashion ?!?

Please please can you work on this urgently - we use Jira Cloud to run projects across suppliers, and this issue is now affecting live production communication with our suppliers.  Switching to the old view is not a valid workaround for us as the suppliers are across many countries and retraining them as to the old view is impossible - it was hard enough getting them all fully conversant with the current platform across multiple languages!  We use attached images and drawings to confirm production decisions and complete design work - this is core functionality for us and if one issue has got to this point for us I expect further to follow quickly!
