Unexpected change in Version Picker (multiple version) custom field

Summary

In one of the latest JIRA updates, there was an unexpected change in how Version Picker (multiple version) custom fields display.

Instead of showing a simple button to click and display the version (filtering as characters are entered), a list of versions is shown in Edit Screen for issues (regardless of whether the users started editing this field).

The Affects Version/s, Fix Version/s are still as they used to be.

It used to look like the 'Fix Version/s' still looks like (this field also allows multiple version, but it's a system field):

However, the custom field looks like this now (it was not selected or focused):

This is not happening in the Create Screen in most cases, but we can see it when editing the issue.

Steps to Reproduce

1. Create a Version Picker (multiple versions) custom field
2. Add it to a project’s Edit and View Screens
3. Create an issue using these screens
4. Edit it

Expected Results

The versions are only listed when the field is selected, just like Fix and Affects Version/s fields.

Actual Results

A permanent list of versions is displayed, taking up space.

Notes

There was a change just like that to version 7.1.0-OD-02 described here:

We've made selecting the quick filters on the Release (JIRA Software) or Versions (JIRA Core) page more intuitive by removing the drop-down and adding persistent 'sticky' labels. This allows you to quickly filter your versions by Released or Unreleased, and we've even made the search bar a little slicker too. Try it to see what we mean!

However, this change was to the Release and Version pages, not to the fields in the issues. This planned change in the Release/Version page may have inadvertently changed the custom fields in JIRA as well, for example, in case this field's render uses the same methods as the Release/Version pages.

None so far.
