As of now, we do not have this information explicitly mentioned in the HipChat Server documentations related to LDAP and it will cause a catastrophe if an admin who is not aware of this to make the changes and sync the wrong LDAP filter to HipChat Server.

We only suggest customers to perform a backup / snapshot of the instance before making the changes to LDAP filter as mentioned in the Connecting to Crowd or JIRA Applications for User Management, so it might be good to include this warning in the following documentations too:

• Connecting to an LDAP Directory
• Reduce the number of users synchronised from LDAP to HipChat Server

In the future, it will be useful if we can have a feature in HipChat that can avoid this from happening:
