Screen display completely corrupted/broken after update from 2.5.2 to 2.5.3 or 2.5.4 reusing existing data directory

      I have version 2.5.2 running flawlessly. When I tried to update to version 2.5.3 and then to 2.5.4 - reusing the 2.5.2 data directory - the screen display is completely corrupted/broken. (see attached screenshot)
