MariaDB aims to be a replacement for MySQL. MariaDB versus MySQL - Compatibility states:

MariaDB is a binary drop in replacement for MySQL

We still need to consider support and documentation, especially if there's customer confusion about compatibility.

In my opinion Atlassian is not considering support vor MariaDB.

Fact is that since Oracle bought Sun and with that MySQL and Oracle has no intensions of being involved with Open Source, you can assume that MySQL is a dieing product and every Linux based system will drrop MySQL in the near future.
Considdering this, it maybe would be wise for Atlassian to reconsider building in support for MariaDB or otherwise lose much of the linux based custommers in the future.
