When adding a new user to a Crowd directory it would be useful to send username and password information to the new user so that he can login and change his password.
The documentation at http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CROWD/Adding+a+User says "If you have configured an email server and a notification template, Crowd will send the user an email notification about their new password.". However, this feature does not work (exist?) in Crowd 1.6.
