The thumbnail macro renders transparent backgrounds as black, for GIF images.
PNGs are fine, and JPG doesn't support transparency anyway, so GIF is the only affected format.
A quick-and-dirty interim workaround would be to change the default to a white background, as that would reduce the impact of the issue.
