In previous confluence versions log4j would default to use the FileAppender, in recent 2.6 versions this has been set to the ConsoleAppender.
According to comments in the log4j.properties file, the ConsoleAppender (which is used during development) should automatically be replaced with the FileAppender for deployment use.
The logging defaults have changed in 2.7 (http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-6582) but 2.6 should still be using the FileAppender. It looks like the changes to the build process introduced for 2.6, did not migrate this log4j step correctly.
