This issue tracks the impact of a bug in Chromium based web browsers, on the users of Confluence. The root cause of the issue is a problem in the browser's implementation of the spell check functionality.
This spell check bug is being tracked by the Chromium team at Issue 1271918: InputMethodController::GetImeTextSpans() is too slow when editable having many spelling errors - Chromium
We would encourage you to watch that bug for more detailed updates.
6 Jan 2022 Update - Chrome 97 has been released which contains a fix for this bug
17 Jan 2022 Update - A new issue CONFSERVER-76085 has been created to track the in-product workaround to automatically disable spell check for affected browsers. As Chrome 97 and Edge 97 have been released, we recommend upgrading to those browsers to resolve this issue properly.
Problem
Editing Large Confluence page is extremely slow in browsers built upon Chromium Version 96 and Chromium Version 97 Beta builds.
Chromium is the underlying browser engine in the below browsers and many others
- Google Chrome
- New Microsoft Edge
- Brave
- Vivaldi
A full list of browsers based on Chromium can be viewed at Chromium (web browser) - Wikipedia
Environment
Tested with Confluence DC / Server version 7.13.2 and 7.14.1
The following browser versions are known to be impacted
- Chrome version 96.0.4664.45 (Official Build) (64-bit)
- Chrome version 96.0.4664.55 (Official Build)
- Brave Version 1.32.106 Chromium: 96.0.4664.45
- Edge Version 96.0.1054.34 (Official build) (64-bit)
- Any other browsers using Chromium Build 96 or 97 Beta
Steps to Reproduce
- Create a large page in your Confluence instance
- Edit the page in an affected browser
- the issue is easily reproduced in Incognito mode as well
- Try to add new content (text for example) and/or try to scroll up and down on the page
Expected Results
- Scrolling and adding content operations should stay responsive regardless of the content length
Actual Results
- It can take several seconds to browse and/or add new content efficiently on a large page
- Scrolling up and down will result in the page content being rendered "blanked" for a couple of seconds
Resolution
Upgrade to a Chromium 97 based browser e.g. Chrome 97 or Edge 97
Workaround
- Disable spell check on the browser settings
- Downgrade Browser version
- Use another browser which is not impacted.
Notes
Issue happens regardless if Collaborative Edition is switched ON or OFF
