The scenario
I recently was making a template for our quarterly meetings.
I was copy pasting from a page that already existed that we made as we went and intended to turn into a template.
We had a screenshot of our initial portfolio plan for the quarter in it and I wanted to keep that photo in the template to serve as an example when creating the next meeting note page like this one.
So I copy pasted my old page, removed content that wasn't the base, added instructional text in spots, and hit save. It looked like it saved just fine at first glance, however when I went to go look at it the next day the template was no where to be found. Not in the space templates, not in global templates, not in drafts, it was nowhere.
So I went to recreate it and this time after hitting saved looked for it in the template list to see it was missing. So I hit back so I could not lose my work this time and in a new tab made a simple test template. It saved correctly so I slowly added pieces of my template hitting save along the way till I found that as soon as the picture was added any changes made with adding the picture (presumably any other attachment as well, this is untested) are note saved when you hit save, they just disappear.
How to recreate
- Create a template in a space or global confluence
- Copy paste in a screenshot of something (or other image, I only tested copy paste)
- Hit Save
- Find that the template is missing from template list.
Or edit an existing template, add a picture, hit save, then view the template and note the missing picture.
The suggestion
It would be nice to be able to have images in templates, especially for example purposes or other possibilities like a company logo or something.
However, I could see how maybe templates are simply not meant to have attachments in them, in which case, at least a in confluence warning should pop up informing the user that their template can't be saved with an attachment.
Maybe even give the option to remove attachments and save with one button on templates.
Thank you,

IMHO this should not be a suggestion but a BUG, which still exists in Confluence Server v8.3.2. See
CONFCLOUD-53177. The workaround 'add the image via the "Insert Files and Images" dialogue instead of via copy / paste' is working, but very annoying with many images to copy/insert.From my POV this is an essential function and should not be sorted out as low prio. (see comment)
