      Summary

View File macro in Confluence Server is not showing thumbnail for Video attachment such as MP4.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Edit a page and upload a video attachment via Drag&Drop (for example we use a MP4 file)
      2. Insert the video after upload is completed and Save the page
      3. The uploaded video will be placed in the page using View File macro

      Expected Results

The View File macro should show a thumbnail of the video attachment like in Confluence Cloud

      Actual Results

No thumbnail is being shown for the video attachment displayed in View File macro

      Workaround

After uploading the video attachment, manually place a Multimedia Macro in the page linked to the video instead of using the default View File macro

        1. viewfile_Cloud.png
          viewfile_Cloud.png
          100 kB
        2. viewfile_Server.png
          viewfile_Server.png

If an update to allow the ability to set your own video thumbnail could be prioritized, that would be great.  Confluence appears to randomly select a thumbnail which does not look visually appealing. Thank you.

If its possible for Confluence to generate three video thumbnail suggestions automatically that the user could choose from, that would be a great start. And it would be even better if there was an option to upload your own thumbnail. When using the Multimedia Macro it takes the first frame of the video, which is often black. It doesn't look appealing on the page.

The ability to generate a thumbnail in the API would be very welcome.

If the Multimedia plugin could do this automatically of course that would be better, but I'll take an API addition so that I can make my own as a bridge/half-way house solution.

Hello and thank you for raising this issue. Unfortunately, Confluence Cloud uses a different cloud-based conversion service than Confluence Server. This is why we are seeing the difference. However, this is not a bug in Confluence Server, but rather an improvement on the feature in Confluence Cloud. I am going to move this to a suggestion.
